Even though he had doubts about the plan and he was so afraid of actually killing the king that he even started hallucinating, with the encouragement from his wife, he managed to go through with the plan and kill the king. 

He then blamed it on Duncan's two chamberlains and killed them too, before they could defend themselves. While on the road, the murderers catch the father and the son, killing Banquo. However, Fleance manages to escape into the night and this leaves a big question mark in the play. Will Banquo's sons continue the royalty ? 

His fear of the prophecy being true starts to change him. He becomes even more frightened, ruthless, cruel, and illogical as regards his actions. 

At the feast that night, Banquo’s ghost visits Macbeth. The First Apparition, telling him that he should be aware of Macduff creates an intense feeling of insecurity within Macbeth. He seeks to kill him to protect himself. 

The Second Apparition is that no man ever born from women shall harm Macbeth. Well, this quote plants the idea in Macbeth that if he takes Macduff out of the picture, he won't have any more risks in his life and he can do anything.

That way, no one will ever stand in his way to absolute royalty. However, soon enough, he learns that Macduff has fled the country to join Malcolm in a force against Macbeth. 

Since he cannot kill Macduff now, he decides to  surprise Macduff's castle and "give to the edge of the word / His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls / That trace him in his line [those that follow Macduff]". At the end of Malcolm's speech, Macduff becomes shocked and says that he will not be fit to rule. Thus, he proves his honesty and integrity to Malcolm, who then reveals that he was testing him. Later on, before the army gathered by Malcolm arrive at Dunsinane Hill, Macbeth receives news that Lady Macbeth has killed herself.
