Going into this project, initially, I didn't have any ideas for my FMP and felt pretty hopeless, I thought the best way to give me creative gumption was to use personal interests and marry them with my professional interests. After a lot of thinking and mind-mapping, I thought to combine my interests in sustainability and regeneration of waste products, with my interest in the coffee industry to create something that I feel suits my values as well as creating something that I feel matters and has a real purpose. In my final term at uni I have narrowed down what I appreciate in this industry and where I see myself fitting in, my optimistic and nihilistic way of viewing the industry further pushes me to want to work and research for brands with a sense of community and use social-listening to produce work for a new post-idealist generation.

For this project I was to help my generation feel as if they can relax into this new optimistic and nihilistic way of living by romanticising the mundane. At a time of political unrest consumers want to rediscover the beauty in everyday life to build cultural salience, my collaboration idea aims to drive local brand engagement at a time when everything seems bleak and hopeless to help with the building of businesses community.

For this project I propose, based off of my trend research findings, a collab that has community values at heart and also sustainability. I want to create a collaboration between a smaller/local coffee house and a London-based ceramicist, by using coffee waste that would usually be disposed of as a sustainable pigment for clay creating a small line of mugs and/or plates that will then be sold in said coffee house and used in their restaurants and bakeries. This inspiration for this idea came from the idea of creating projects/collaboration in smaller businesses that have the sense of community, as this is something that I personally appreciate, whilst making use of waste for creative purposes.

I wanted to ask myself the question of who would I be making this project for, probably those who are like-minded in the sense that they appreciate the little things and have this interest in inner sustainability. Generation Z is different in a way that sets us apart from the generations before us, I feel as if our generation has a real appreciation for work-life balance, labelled as a regression generation because of the way we view success, I think the way Gen Z are looking and approaching the future instals hope even throughout the political unrest we have faced constantly.

I think Gen Z and Millennials with the privilege of having disposable income in today's world would be looking to invest their money within small community projects where they know they will see a difference and it'll make a difference for those around them. Gen Z are opting for slower ways of living and are leaning into "hope-core", adopting a core purpose to embody a positive path forward for society and that gives consumers a clearly defined positive change they can buy into. Gen Z is demanding authenticity from brands as a result: 72% of Gen Z consumers are more likely to buy from a company that contributes to social causes as businesses are the only trusted institution globally, over NGOs, governments and media, according to the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer.

I found when researching future consumer wants and needs that there is a common theme of wanting a steady path to personal fulfilment rather than a sprint to picture-perfect happiness. Linking back to my ideas of post-idealism and social listening I think the collaboration reflects the wants/needs of my generation and the growth of inner sustainability within ourselves and communities. The idea of "finding pleasure in the pointlessness" links to my idea by using something as simple as coffee to create a sense of happiness and optimism for a generation fighting societal norms.

Jolene is the third restaurant owned in partnership by David and his business partner Jeremie Cometto-Lingenheim. The two met whilst working at Wright Brothers – David cooking and Jeremie front of house. It is a dynamic they continued with when they set up their first restaurant five years ago, Primeur. “We had regulars from day one,” says David. These would range from the threadbare thespians to Islington’s affluent. Like Jolene, Primeur serves simple food; without the frills, but with all the good stuff. Their second restaurant Westerns Laundry, with a focus on seafood, nurtured a similar loyalty. Both serve low intervention natural wines, as does Jolene. Jolene is a small chain of bakeries and restaurants which support regenerative food systems and ethical food and drink production/farming.

"WE BELIEVE IN A REGENERATIVE COLLECTIVE GOAL WHERE ALL ACTORS, BIG AND SMALL, PLAY A PART IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE SOIL AND ITS MYRIAD OF BENEFITS IN FIXING THE PLANET.

A London-based small batch coffee roastery that is dedicated to sourcing only the highest quality, sustainably grown specialty coffee. From bean selection to brewing, 15 Grams strive for excellence every step of the way, with a focus on creating a positive impact for both the environment and the communities that produce our coffee.

"We believe that every cup of coffee has the power to change lives for the better. That's why we take the time to get to know the farmers and their stories, paying a fair price that's at least 2.5x above the minimum fair-trade price, so they can continue to sustain their livelihoods and communities.

With every sip of our coffee, you can enjoy rich flavours and aromas, knowing that you're contributing to a better world."

I chose 15 Grams as a potential collaboration because they have become one of my favourite local coffee shops since moving to London for Uni, the vibe in their Greenwich store is always so inviting and I love the sense of community their brand has. Their tone of voice is very educational when it comes to sustainable coffee production which is something that I'm looking at for this project.

Blank Street is an American coffee company and coffeehouse chain. It was launched in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2020. As of December 2022, the company operates 57 locations in New York, London, Boston, and D.C. Blank Street Inc. Blank Street is committed to being part of their consumer "daily ritual", their bright urban decor and expansive list of matcha cold brews may trick commuters into thinking this is one of the capital’s overpriced independent chains. Blank Street currently has 24 stores in London, and hopes to push that number to over 30 within the next year.

They are all about quality customer experience, adamant on the fact that they will never introduce digital ordering systems as they want to keep the face-to-face interaction with their customers. As well as this, instead of investing high amounts of money into larger branches Blank Street have decided to have smaller but more frequent branches throughout their cities, spending less much on infrastructure and design and putting more money into quality of product, service and brand advertising.

Blank Street Coffee also uses automated espresso machines meaning cafe workers at the store require less training than at a typical cafe, something Llado says helps employees focus less on the manual work but more on the customer experience.

Carolina Ambida known as Lina E. Ceramics, is a ceramicist that started studying art in her late teens. This then progressed to photography and she worked as a professional photographer for years after. Years later she studied fine Art at Goldsmiths in London where she graduated with a painting practice. She brings a painterly attitude to her ceramic practice which I have been doing for over 5 years now, creating obscure and some purely decorative pieces for online stockist The Ode To which specialises in curating fine art pieces for a specific audience.

She hand-builds the sculptures using slabs which she cuts and manipulates to create abstract shapes. The glazing technique is layered using different types of glaze recipes such as a highly textured crater glaze. Colour is key to Lina's work generally and by using ceramic stains to create colour palettes for each piece.

"Freedom is the key inspiration for the pieces I created for The Ode To. Free from utility and being purely decorative, the sculptures can be seen as pure form and even as painterly gestures."

Showcased on her Instagram, Lina also shows of her more traditional pottery work, mugs, plates, candle sticks etc. that still show her very unique style of ceramics and her own personal taste. Encompassing her love of fun playful shapes and colours, her free-spirited way of designing, her body of work shows a spectacle of abstract playful design.

A freelance illustrator and designer who has worked with Skinny Dip and Casetify, creating designs and patterns to be printed on phone cases, stationary etc. She has recently delved into the ceramics scene by designing a collection with up-and-coming brand Damson Madder. Her style and Damson Madders align well and speak to the same/similar audience. Poppy doesn't have a website and there isn't much about her online as she is a freelance designer, the information I have found is from her Instagram and LinkedIn mainly that's why it is so sparse. Because of this, I have chosen not to go with this particular designer for my ceramics concept as I want to have some in-depth information into the designer and their ways of working, values etc. Although I love the style of Poppy's work and the stuff she creates, there is just not enough information out there about her and her work as she is still new and working freelance at the moment.

I like the idea of this collab as I think both brands' aesthetics marry into each other very well and a cohesive. Unfortunately, I don't think this collab would be the best option for me to express my consumer trends findings and emerging trends within culture and lifestyle. I feel as if, since reading into Blank Street more, they have a very logistical and corporate way of thinking and this is something I am trying to steer away from in this project as I want it to feel very community-based and have a small business feel to it. From my research into emerging consumer wants and needs, a main recurrence I saw was that people want to feel part of a community again and appreciate companies' values and transparency, although Blank Street come across as the type of business that would maybe reflect these values, my research into them shows that a lot of the way they operate is to give Blank Street the "small business" aesthetic. Purposely buying smaller locations, seen as a money-saving ploy, can also be described as them "downplaying" the high financial income they generate to give the brand a small business-type feel and make consumers feel as if they are supporting a small company, which is in fact a multi-million dollar/pound business.

I feel as if for this project I want to work with a smaller coffee chain in which the values align with the sustainability aspect I am trying to preach as well as the sense of community I am trying to build around this project, that's why for me I think this collab would not be the right choice for this project and wouldn't be the best example of a ideal collaboration I would pitch based off of my consumer insight research. Working with Poppy Almond I find would be difficult due to just the sheer lack of information there is online about her and her work and even trying to see her work in person is not possible due to her work only being sold on her Etsy story (which is currently closed for the foreseeable).

I feel as if this collaboration between Jolene and Lina E feels more suited to the trends I am evaluating amongst consumers. The tone of voice and aesthetics of both parties feel natural and not forced, something that I feel is key to creating an authentic collaboration project that is built on environmental and fair ethical values. From my initial research, I can already tell that Jolene is a more ethical practice and is focused on slower production which also plays a part in brand values and how they present themselves to their customers, I feel as if this better aligns with my aims for the project and will allow me to get across the importance of the community feel I am trying to portray this project.

The look and feel of both Jolene and Lina E feel as if they align very well with each other. Aesthetic-wise, they both have a very warm feel in their use of colours, but they're also both a bit rustic looking from an outward perspective something that I feel compliments and reflects each brand's style. I feel as if a collab between the two would be very believable as Jolene seem like the type of businesses the collaborate with other smaller independent businesses, as well as the fact that the products produced by Lina E fit the visual aesthetic Jolene are showing both brands seem to me as if they would match very well.

WHAT IT MEANS TO ME <3

When looking at what to do for my FMP I felt stretched when thinking about ideas and concepts that I knew I was going to be working on for the following 4 months, it probably didn't help that in Janurary I was in a massive creative slump that stopped me from being able to come up with ideas that I was passionate about. Being a Gen Z and having social media play a massive part in my day-to-day life I have felt take a massive tole on my outlook of the world, feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by the world before even having a chance to break into it has had me questioning whether I even like or want to work in fashion in the first place. I find it very hard to not be deeply affected by what is going on around me in the world, from politics to the rising cost of living crisis, going into adulthood and greater issues like the ongoing atrocities going on over the world, I felt unmotivated to create any sort of fashion-related work as it felt pointless to me. This term I had been hit with a wave of nihilism, for me it felt hard to detach myself from the outside world and work on my project, I felt as if it was a waste of time for myself and felt unimportant in the bigger picture. For me, the direction the fashion industry is heading in doesn't seem like an appealing place to work or be a part of anymore, the industry today has now been tailored to best support middle-upper creatives who have the financial stability to support themselves whilst also pursuing a creative career, and for me someone who even throughout uni has seen the reality of being working class and working in fashion and it just doesn't seem plausible anymore. So ultimately I still feel at a loss, feeling like I'm studying and trying to pursue a career in an industry that isn't built for me and that doesn't bring me any drive or passion anymore, whilst being stuck in a city where I'm having to work 45-hour weeks whilst I study to even make it by, and just generally feeling a loss of hope for the future my generation as a whole.

But despite all this my FMP still needed to be done, so I thought I'd use my frustration to create something that felt as if it had a purpose and meaning behind it. So I started by doing some trend research into the needs and wants for my generation (gen Z) as well as millennials, generations that are continually misunderstood and disregarded by the rise of negative outlook on "woke" culture, I found out that what I was feeling wasn't singular but in fact "trending" in a way. I knew from this that I wanted to create a project in which a community aspect would be at the forefront and look at ways to bring people together in a digital world. My research showed that the younger generations are in favour of slowing down our way of life, finding pleasure in the mundane and rebuilding some sort of transparency lost over the years of being misled by our government. So using my research and discussing with my friends around me, I thought the best way to build my FMP and feel as if what I was creating was actually for something.

For the last year and a half, I have worked as a barista in a coffee shop I meet different people every day but I also see the same people every day, and I have been able to see what positive impact something as simple as a coffee and a chit-chat can have on people's days. For some people, it gives their day a structure and a purpose to get out of the house, and it has an immense impact on me and my social skills this is something that I found as an inspiration point for my project. I knew I wanted to build a community project out of something as simple as coffee and have the culture emphasise regaining connections in a chronically online generation, whilst also finding how I can use my skills to create a rich and meaningful project. Using my interests in trend researching and social listening in general, I wanted to create a community that felt as if it could be actualised, so I decided to build "PERK UP" a community built off of the independent bakery JOLENE and is in partnership with Mad Millennials a mental health charity fighting loneliness in the younger generation. The aim is to rebuild transparency and human connection through the simple mundane acts that have been forgotten about today to get people talking about issues that are directly impacting our future, with talks at each meeting by people giving insight into different aspects of the creative industry and the wider world, as well as giving people to make new friends in their adulthood. I chose JOLENE as through my research I found that their brand values and morals align with what I wanted to vocalise through my community and they were in the right age group for who I wanted to target my community towards.

Sorry this is a lot, but I just felt as if I needed to give some context to my very non-fashion fashion degree final major project <3

When considering what one of the 3 collaboration ideas I wanted to take further for my FMP, the idea that I went for initially was this one between 15 Grams and Big Jugs Abby, but upon further research I realised it was hard to create a rich project with the lack of information that there was for both parties in the grand scheme of things it would be difficult to grow my project. I still like the idea of using two small brands to have that sense of community and wholesomeness, but I just don't feel like these two are the right kind of style for the message im trying to portray. 15 Grams is an exceptionally small coffee house with only 2 branches in residential areas like Blackheath and Greenwich and I don't feel like they would bring in the right kind of consumer im trying to target with the collab.

Being called one of London's most stylish and progressive hospitality groups the brand's morals and values run deep throughout all aspects of the brands from farming, to production, to even how they choose site locations etc. Jolene's main goal is to elevate the movement within consumer consciousness and promote its positive impact on carbon sequestration and self-immunity through soil health and can affect political legislature about farming practices in the U.K.

“We had a very clear vision of what we wanted to create and wanted to do it our way.” “We are not business men,” he jokes. “Sometimes we have to make decisions that aren’t good for business, but they’re good for people.”

From reading this article about Jolene I was able to grasp a better understanding of the heart of the brand and their morals and values. One of the owners goes into detail about his experience in a Michellen Star styled restaurant and how he lost his appreciation for food, it was only when he stepped away and stripped back food down to its raw form that he was able to see the real enjoyment that cooking and food can bring to peoples lives. This is another main point as to why I wanted to use Jolene for my collaboration project. I think the morals of the brand and my personal values and values for this project align well and will help me to carry out the message I am trying to portray of community and how the simple things in life can bring people together. The brand have a very community tone of voice, considering the growth they've experienced so rapidly, and has managed to maintain the feel throughout the expansion of their restaurants across London. I think this is down to the owners vision and values for what they appreciate in a business and they want to get this transparency across to their consumers, from the production of the raw products to the dishes served in their restaurants.

“We are not businessmen,” “Sometimes we have to make decisions that aren’t good for business, but they’re good for people.”

The quote above is just a great example of what I mean when I talk about how they have managed to remain authentic even throughout their expansion, constantly having people and peoples needs at the heart of decisions they make to create the most enjoyable experience for their customers.

Ollie Gold, the founder, spent 7 years working in catering departments in various Formula 1 teams, travelling around the world and learning about different cooking cultures in every place he visited.

His passion for food continued to grow and in April 2017, an opportunity arose to take on a derelict chemist in Islington and turn his dream of opening a bakery into a reality. Through the help of Creative Director Lucy, a number of close friends & family, and many hours watching YouTube videos on everything from plumbing to tiling, the doors opened in October 2017.

When researching my ideal consumer for this collaboration project I wanted to look into common themes between generation Z and younger millennials. Youth unemployment is a critical issue, inciting young people to both call for professional and economic support as well as seek new attitudes toward an unforgiving job market, the way our generation is being treated after the turn of the pandemic has resulted in a generation of nihilists who are finding it hard to feel connected to brands who feel untrustworthy. Youth unemployment is high in a number of countries, including China (estimated at over 21%), the UK (12.7%), Spain (28.3%) and South Africa (60.7%) with impacts on young adults’ milestones, financial independence, and day-to-day routines, despite these facts young people are still being faced with criticism and judgment over the high levels of unemployment. However, Gen Zers are rewriting their relationships with unemployment through hopeful and empowering spins. Look to #QuitTok (54.8m views) for TikToks of young workers quitting their jobs, or #Funemployed creators vlogging about life in between gigs.

With this emerging mindset, brands have the opportunity to take these tensions and turn them into ironic optimism. Playing into the chaos and building a community amongst the younger generation by channeling authenticity and sincerity to gain trust and understanding, allowing them to amid joy in economically challenging times. The idea of brands tapping into peoples hobbies in order to gain a more personal connection will further instal the empowering look our generation is having in a time where there doesn't seem to be a "silver lining" as such.

Taking all this into consideration, I have come up with a couple of ideal consumers that I think would buy/support this collaboration.

I think the ideal consumer for this collaboration would be someone around the late Gen Z (21-27) /early millennial (28-38) age range practicing the Gen We mindset. They are someone with enough disposable income to be able to afford these type of luxuries and care about where they are spending their money, living around North/ North-East London since graduating from University. A sustainably conscious generation already due to the growing anxieties of climate change, my consumer is someone who looks to support smaller sustainable projects that feel like they're making a difference, whether that is locally at markets or buying off of small brands on Instagram or Etsy. I don't see my ideal consumer as any particular gender as I feel as if this collab project is non-gender specific, but I see it attracting a particular type of person who's morals align with the values of the consumer-described.

My consumer is someone who also has an appreciation for a slower lifestyle and appreciates a healthy work-life balance, a lover of food and coffee they're someone who values good quality ethically produced products. In a time of shifting socio-cultural priorities, not shopping in commercial highstreet chains for their daily caffeine fix my consumer likes to spend their money wisely in places where their custom is appreciated and they're treated with value, purchasing from places with a strong ethical voice who are contributing to the wider community. They spend their spare time testing out new businesses in their local area and getting themselves familiar with the community.

They work within the creative field working for some sort of charity or within a sustainably conscious brand, my consumer values where they work and how their time is spent and used within a company. My consumer values community and connection and take this very seriously when deciding where they will work, appreciating companies that will allow them to grow personally and professionally and where their ideas will contribute to a bigger purpose. Valuing education even in adult life, my consumer is someone who is politically and economically aware of the growing struggles amongst their generation and finds ways within their life to educate themselves on current affairs to ensure a better understanding of the world around them.

My consumer's hobbies include reading, writing, pottery, the theatre and outdoor activities such as running and hiking. They like to challenge themselves and like I suggested they are someone who is very much educated in terms of current affairs so they like to read non-fiction books, the guardian is their news source of choice as it helps them to further educate themselves on their left-wing views. They value the time they spend with their close friends as building strong connections with people is something that they cherish, drawn to a more introverted way of living, my consumer's favourite way to spend their time with their loved ones is over a more cozy and intimate dinner party whether this be hosted by them or at their favourite local restaurant Jolene.

In a time of uncertainty and political doom, young people are rebelling against the societal norms constructed by generations before us. Pushing back against the pressures of panoptic perfection and the unrealistic portrayals of having it all Gen Z and Millennials are accelerating a shift towards a more honest and healthy display of reality for many people today. Despite there being less global poverty today and more science and technology to solve crises, one study of 1,000 people aged 16-25 spread out across 10 nations revealed that 56% believe humanity is doomed, causing a whole generation to find meaning in a meaningless world.

Nihilism – a rejection of purpose and values and a belief in the idea that nothing matters – is pushing Millennials and Gen Z to question the productivity-obsessed and goal-oriented culture they exist in.

Often described as a social-media-obsessed generation, millennials and Gen Z's are finding ways to reclaim this but from a more optimistic and nihilistic viewpoint. Nihilism is described as a rejection of perfection and is defined as "unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations". Our generation is finding ways to reject the status quo to find a counterbalance between activism and wellness and redefine the nihilistic image. Our generation is the first to be watching global catastrophes unfold in front of our eyes on our phone screens every day, although harmful in many ways if seen by individuals who are too young, it is allowing us to see unfiltered truth and learn about the detrimental effects of western media has had on our generations view of the world. Research has found TikTok now delivers troubling content to users (such as content centred on self-harm or eating disorders) every 39 seconds. Add in TikTok's algorithm, which shares interest-based content on a continuous cycle, and doomscrolling has become almost inescapable on the platform. This has caused a generational shift and a rejection of what we have been told before is the norm when coming into adulthood, it has allowed our generation to be able to make up their own minds as they are finally able to see an unfiltered world which has been hidden from them in previous years.

Young consumers of digital media have embraced and adopted a nothing matters worldview, contributing to the spread of a new sort of generational nihilism. Young people who use digital forums to embrace this idea collectively to feel less alone are exhibiting a surge in digital collective effervescence (a feeling of harmony) and a sense of camaraderie. The floating rock craze on TikTok revolves around the notion that since we are minuscule particles in an immense cosmos, there is no purpose to experience emotions because nothing is genuinely significant. 1.1 billion relevant videos are available. The number of Reddit users interested in r/nihilism has increased dramatically over the past three years, from 31k in January 2019 to 130k in February 2023.

Following two years of a pandemic, where isolation, loneliness and touch-starvation disrupted young people’s lives and warped their perceptions of the world, 2022 was unsurprisingly anchored in nihilistic sentiments as consumers sought to live life to the fullest due to the fact that the future was uncertain. This has caused a generational shift in community values and what people appreciate pushing people from perfectionism towards a more realistic and optimistic approach to life, appreciating the little things that in terms really aren't that little but build a sense of community that has been lacking.

Finding meaning in the new world- Anti-nihilism is not toxic positivity, the concept that keeping positive, and only positive, is the right way for people to live their lives, and which keeps people from processing emotions and invalidates the feelings of others. Instead, it can be understood through the lens of tragic optimism, which boasts a more realistic framing and allows the new generation to see the world without the "rose-tinted glasses" on. This theory has been accelerated because of the use of social media and over-saturated platforms, such as TikTok, have forced this generation to form their own opinions and standpoints on their lives. Like I have said, Generation Z have been the trailblazers in this shift but so have Millennials. Living through the 2008 recession millennials have faced hard-ships that will forever alter their outlook on the world we live in, and have further pushed the idea of searching for a life of meaning away from corporate structure and societies expectations of them. Finding joy within their life outside of their work reflects the absurdity of the career-obsessed generations before us.

According to Wendy Syfret, an Australian-based writer and researcher, nihilism can be a launchpad for alternative forms of purpose, action and happiness. In 2021, she authored The Sunny Nihilist: How a Meaningless Life Can Make You Truly Happy, which aims to shift the narrative of nihilism and reframe it around the “pleasure of pointlessness". Similarly, optimistic nihilism is a concept that centres on the idea that since life is meaningless, the possibilities are ultimately limitless. It’s about accepting the freedom offered in a life void of meaning, which will evolve from the present passive norm.

In todays world of unstoppable inflation, unaffordable rents, and unemployment rates among young people growing, the feeling of financial hopelessness amongst our generation continues to fuel the feeling of impending doom making it impossible to find security. Although many have accepted the fact that they will be unable to buy a house a large percentage have decided to not accept but in return retaliate by adopting a modernised anti-capitalism view. Once a radical term, anti-capitalism has taken to the masses amongst Gen Z and Millennials but with a softer approach than those before. As I have stated, the continued use of social media amongst our generation has allowed us to see media in a different and new light and take on a new sense of empathy towards matters that were once seen as non-negotiable in generations before.

Generation Z and Alpha are growing up whilst regressing simultaneously, to combat this people are redefining what it means to be rich. Rather than the end goal to be finically rich todays generation are looking to be enriched in more fulfilling and redefine what it means to be successful due to the failing society we are living in today. Gen Z and Millennials have adapted to this and are finding happiness outside of traditional norms of success, overwhelmed by the problems facing the world they inherited they’re compelled to take action as they’ve got nothing left to lose. This group is tired of the systems in place, and they’ve co-opted nihilism to cope with the fact that no one is coming to save them, so they’re trying to save themselves.

As a consistent theme of impending doom seems to take over our social media whether that's through aesthetic voice-over montages, or well-designed political activism posts on our explore pages, our generation is continuing to be educated on a different level in terms of the world we live in and how we consume the media. Through videos like this, although not traditionally deemed as education, teach our online generation about empathy and the importance of having it in a world that can now be so easily made to look a certain way through the new type of media that is being produced and what we are now able to see because of social media.

They have grown and opened new locations expanding out from the first branch that opened in Islington to locations in London Fields and Victoria Park continuing with the same rustic and homely feel that the original store has. Since opening their bakeries they have opened up a private hire studio space as well as 2 homeware stores that specialise in artisanal home and kitchenware for coffees, pastries and just general life. The look and feel of their homeware is something that I want to reflect in my collab between Lina E and Jolene, the neutral tones with the mix of glazed pottery and non-glazed to give different textures and a earthy feel to it.

Our aim is to not only meet acceptable levels of responsibility towards sustainability, but to work hard to find best practice and to share these learnings, building a community with purpose. We’re committed to moving towards a circular economy and whilst we know that there is no silver bullet, we are constantly redesigning and transitioning to improve.

According to the empirical evidence, today’s emerging adults (Millennials/GenY, born after 1980) are more Generation Me than Generation We when compared to previous generations. Five data sets show a generational increase in narcissism, including one that demonstrates significant increases when a confound is controlled. College and child samples increase in self-esteem over the generations. Some high school samples show no change, though high school students increasingly embrace other overly positive self-views. In nationally representative samples of high school and college students, values have shifted toward extrinsic (money, fame, and image) concerns and away from intrinsic (community, affiliation) concerns. These trends have mostly negative consequences, such as lower empathy, less concern for others, and less civic engagement (e.g., interest in social issues, government, and politics). Parents and teachers should focus on teaching children and adolescents the values of hard work and consideration for others instead of an inflated sense of self.

Apricity is probably one of JOLENE's direct competitors in terms of values and end goals. They both believe in a circular regenerative system where low-waste is at the heart of it, contributing to a wider community and helping the environment through promoting sustainable farming. The dining experience at Apricity seems more fine-dining than JOLENE but both offer the same specialised dining experience offering an array of different courses on a weekly rotation. Apricity has also been offered a Michelin green award due to their consistent sustainability activism and continuous regenerative restaurant style.

WHAT IS A GLIMMER?

The term “glimmer” comes from psychotherapist Deb Dana, who defines it as small moments of positivity that can combat negative emotions. Glimmers engage the body’s vagus nerve, which can regulate a person’s heartbeat and mental state, making them a healthy coping mechanism for people who suffer from PTSD, depression or anxiety. Glimmers will become a more universal healing tool and practice as more people struggle with negative emotions.

Glimmers are more personal in the sense that they are individual to each person and what they see as a true form of happiness, whether that be watching a sunset or hearing your favourite song in a cafe, glimmers are personal to each person and provide a small feeling of hope to combat these negative emotions. Glimmers can be seen as a universal healing tool and can be used as a way to engage consumers with the brand on a deeper level and provide comfort. A good example of this is Spotify's new AI generated day list setting that builds the listener a personalised playlist based on what they are usually listening to at that time in the day. Listeners will receive a morning mix, an afternoon mix, and an evening mix with witty hyper-personalised titles aimed to encapsulate niche emotions bringing humour into something as simple as a playlist.

This consumer trend was something that I wanted to research further in terms of my project as I feel as if it is something that attracts me personally as a consumer, as well as something that is continuing to grow around me. The idea of targeting a consumer by tapping into their niche interests has continued to grow due to the help of social media platforms like TikTok which produces quick but engaging content in the forms of cute aesthetically pleasing videos, making things that would have only attracted a smaller community can now reach the masses and has become more mainstream.

In terms of what is trending, it goes back to things that were once popular and are making the rounds and once again becoming popular but on a different more modernised level. In a day and age where consumers may feel forgotten due to the overwhelming amount of businesses, big or small trying to make their way and gain a following, Gen z's in particular want to feel like they are being listened to and considered. Anxiety to keep up with digital environments is at a high and users are experiencing the fear paradox, or “FOLO squared”. On one side of the pendulum is the fear of logging off which is driven by FOMO (fear of missing out) on niche cultural references or ephemeral social media moments. On the other side, there is the fear of logging on due to the panoptic surveillance state that social media has become.

The above is an example of brands finding ways to be more niche in terms of their marketing to customers. The small business Outsourced Vintage is teaming up with instagram and tiktok content creator Lara Adkins to create a personalised "shop my wardrobe experience". Lara is known for her elevated Y2K style incorporated with her relatable "fashion girlie" content that she posts on her social making it a leading factor as to why she is so followed and loved online. Teaming up with her to create this pop-up event allows her followers, as well as fans of vintage shopping in general, to have an experience that feels hands-on as it is marketed as "an evening of shopping with Lara Adkins" where people will be able to shop her "wardrobe". She has selected a range of clothes from Outsourced matching her taste and shoppers will be able to come and buy pieces hand-selected by Lara herself.

Events like this have become more popular over the last few years after the rise of influencers and brands realising how useful of a marketing tool they are. Pop-ups like such allow the consumer to have a more personalised shopping experience, telling customers there are only limited tickets available for the weekend-long popup creating this sense of exclusivity on top of an already niche target audience showing that Outsourced vintage is listening to watch their consumers are watching and liking online and are trying to replicate that in real life. They know their consumers aren't the average high street shopper and are stimulated by quirky clothing and by pairing up with Lara, someone who is chronically on London Fashion TikTok, allows the consumer to feel as if they are being listened to. The small intimate style pop-up only accessible by tickets continues to intrigue their typical consumer as that sense of exclusivity is something that shoppers are looking for as it makes them feel recognised.

With the rise in Gen Z and millennials' conscious shopper mindset, small brands know that they are in demand and are allowing themselves to remain small and keep that independent brand feel as shoppers continue to want to support smaller businesses. Teaming up with smaller-scale influencers like Lara Adkins, someone who is watched by their average consumer and also shops at the brand, shows that Outsourced wants to remain true to their brand's image and build on the audience they already have by using realistic collaborations that continue to keep that small business feel. Grabbing shopper's attention through a series of short and chopping instagram reels and TikTok that include styling content, general aesthetically pleasing shots, and clips of some of the pieces that will be available for customers to buy, give us a tease of what is to come but without giving too much away.

Marketing to a niche audience helps businesses build brand loyalty. With a niche market, you engage with a smaller audience. So, you can focus on the quality of customer service and nurture your relationship with them. As you cater to the customers’ specific needs, you are not just acting like a supplier but more like a right partner, allowing the consumer to feel appreciated by their custom to you. In the rise of uncertain times I thin catering to niche audiences is something that will not only attract a new range of consumers but also make the ones already following feel a part of something.

Targeting to a niche audience automatically takes a business out of the mainstream agenda, although you're brand might not be everyone's cup of tea, there will be an audience for it and they are more likely to remain loyal to them. Building a tight-knit consumer base knocks out the opportunity for competition, although there may be other brands out their doing similar things to each other if a consumer likes the tone of voice of the brand and how they market to their consumers this is something that they won't forget when browsing other businesses. As I have looked at already, consumers are in demand for brands that align with their morals in light of the declining state of the world, so by brands tapping into a smaller and more reachable consumer base rather than mainstream content, the brand will be able to build a richer fan base.

GEN WE

When researching into the Gen Me vs. Gen We consumer analysis there is a clear divide between the two and how they approach empathy in terms of a wider community and not just themselves or who they're around. The Gen We defines itself as having a feeling of moral responsibility for the world around them, these are individuals who have lost all trust in large corporate organisations and governments. Across the globe, they are disappointed in where we are politically and economically, but they’re optimistic by nature and believe they can drive change, especially at a local level. ‘Clicktivism’ or tweeting support is not enough – if change is going to happen, they know they have to be visible and get up and out there, with a placard, and demand reformation. Although Gen We are chronically online, their posts are less about how beautiful they look and more about what they are doing. They want to spend their money with local businesses or with large international businesses that are putting money back into their local community. No longer can big companies just donate money to local causes; they need to provide and nurture the opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

Gen We are the driving force of change when it comes to marketing, they have given brands a reason to be more open and honest with consumers whilst also breaking industry boundaries that were imprinted on them from generations before. The call to be more real when it comes to social media, boycotting Facetune and airbrushing along with Instagram filters and heavy makeup contouring, Gen we are about positive change on a small scale to make bigger impacts that will have a positive change on communities. Less affected by the constraints of gender and the stereotypical characteristics of men and women, studies show that this generation is more open-minded of gender non-conforming individuals as well as to the idea of breaking gender stereotypes in terms of dress sense, workplace and roles within the household.

One of their top priorities is how they come across on social media – they use Instagram filters, FaceTune and contouring, and they look up to the Kardashians. A hybrid of both gen z's and millennials, generation me is impacting a range of people.

“The experience economy is extremely important to Gen Me: create products or experiences that enhance their image in the digital space, and they will be interested in you as a brand.”

The growing idea is that this generation is more narcissistic than generations previous due to them being brought up in the age of social media, placing more value on material things and appearance rather than their ingenuity. Millennials have been deemed a lazy and narcissistic generation, that young people today are immature and spoiled, are obsessed with technology, and are noncommittal, job-hopping from one employer to another. Although this may ring true amongst a large proportion of Millennials, there is certainly a generational shift in terms of what people want for themselves. The baby-boomer goals of buying a house and having a family are no longer easily achievable goals for millennials due to the decline of the economy, politics and the climate change movement people have bigger priorities. It seems to many to combat this Millennials are focusing inwards on themselves to provide themselves with the validation they would have once got from pursuing conventional goals like the generations before them. By becoming more aware of the declining state of the world, millennials felt as if they had to work on their outward appearance as the world seemed completely doomed, turning to social media IT girls like the Kardashians and the Jenners for ways of self-improvement and redefining their goals. Whether that be reaching 10,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel or finally getting that boob job they've been dreaming of since they were a teen, Gen Me are looking to alter their future by changing the nature in which they view being successful.

The most vocal proponent of the view that young people today are more narcissistic and self-centred than in previous generations is psychologist Jean Twenge at San Diego State University, California, who has been studying the shift for more than 15 years. Twenge believes that the rise in narcissism has its roots in cultural changes, especially the increased focus on individualism through the last few decades. For example, with parents, and society as a whole, today arguably placing greater value on young people’s individual achievement over their civic duty.

The menu for Jolene is on a daily rotation and the dishes change from season to season offering diners a completed tailored experience depending on what time of year they come. The menu works in a tasting menu style, where dishes are smaller and it is implied that guests order around 2 per person to share with the rest of the group. We were recommended around 10 dishes between the 5 of us, the dishes get bigger as you work your way down the menu, and they offered 2 sweet desserts and 1 cheese board.

We had the loveliest experience from the moment we walked through the door, the atmosphere, service and quality of food was definitely worth the price we paid for the meal and we all agreed that we would want to come back and try a new menu when they rotate it again. The atmosphere and welcoming hospitality displayed to us during our visit to Jolene shows that this brand had been nurtured with the values and ethics that it takes to build a sustainably conscious brand in this day and age, it reflects through the consideration of each and every aspect in their restaurant.

strong brand identity - JOLENE have always remained strong on their brand ethos and what they stand for, regenerative food systems and sustainability, and projects this into every branch they open. Their strong brand identity is what helps them to stand out amongst competitors, they have never swayed on what they stand for and have always remained transparent with their consumers ensuring quality products with a meaning.

individuality - visually JOLENE is completely individual, there is no other bakery and restaurant chain with the same image as JOLENE. The hand-drawn logo brings a personal touch to the brand and further pushes their individuality, the general aesthetic and look of their branches stand out amongst the rest.

social media attraction - being made into quirky London fashion girl meme's has boosted JOLENE's traction as well as being deemed one of the best bakeries in London by food bloggers on TikTok and Instagram

sustainable - they are all about a sustainable and reduced waste future, finding new and innovative ways to stay ahead and bring the best quality sustainable products

competitive - JOLENE's menu's change with the seasons and then changes again daily, diners can check on their socials for daily updates on their menu changes, this keeps people interested and makes them stand out amongst competitors. Their pricing is also reasonable for the quality of the product and has continued to be even through inflation, making them competitive against other chains.

community feel - the founders of JOLENE have stated in interviews that without the hospitable staff, their bakeries and restaurants wouldn't feel the same, for them community is one of the most important aspects to running their business. The friendly and warm service is what continues to bring people back to JOLENE again and again, creating a strong community of customers.

cost of living - with the rise in the cost of living, people especially those living in the capital, are finding it increasingly hard to find enough disposable income to spend on simple luxuries. During these strenuous times priorities change, this may pose as a threat to JOLENE as people turn away from spending money on themselves.

competitors - like any brand competitors always pose as a threat, the idea that consumers could prefer their competitors is a real reason why brands slowly start to loose hype. If competitors start to be more aggressive in their marketing strategies to keep up with the challenging times customers may sway to competitors that better suit them.

trend cycle - JOLENE is seen as a trendy and quirky coffee chain that has had hype built up around it from social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and like all trends they eventually dye out. The possibility that the hype surrounding the brand could slowly fizzle is more often than not today, especially because of social media, so unless they find ways to remain relevant and/or keep their consumer base this is a real possibility for JOLENE.

When it comes to sustainability and ethics, Gen Z want to do better but don't always feel like they can afford to. As inflation rises globally, brands can win their long-term respect and loyalty by helping them balance their budgets with their sense of purpose. To help them navigate the cost-of-living crisis and the climate crises, it's essential to encourage longer-term purchases and wallet-friendly hacks over quick, cheap buys that come with hidden costs to the planet. Showing them how ethics and affordability can coexist in times of uncertainty.

From reading this article, I was able to relate it to myself and the people my age surrounding me that are also experiencing this same dilemma. The feeling of having to balance personal morals and the high stress that comes with the current economic crisis is affecting how we as a generation view money and how we spend it is a battle that is apparent in our spending habits. The pressure from the masses to be more sustainable and shop second hand but also the pressures to save money drives Gen Z and Millennials to buy from cheaper fast fashion alternatives.

I think what I take from reading this article is the importance, within my age category, of having a strong awareness of the current climate and how we use this in our everyday lives. This current recession that we are facing is causing us to analyse every aspect of our purchasing habits and re-think the importance of aligning our morals with this.

There is a running theme with brands reassuring Gen Z that leaning into re-commerce can help them find comfort in the fact that they’re contributing to a circular economy. The rise in second-hand fashion and charity shopping has grown immensely with the help of social media, especially TikTok, and has encouraged Gen Z and millennials to shop more sustainably.

Jolene has become well respected in the fine-dining industry as they have managed to climb the popularity ladder by not being anything other than themselves. Being transparent about their ethical farming strategies and climate-conscious ways of working has allowed them to gain traction from a smaller group of individuals but those who respect quality and values. Receiving a mention on the Michellen guide further confirms the undeniable excellence of standard held at Jolene from the atmosphere, to the service and the products

Jolene is the sort of place that we'd all love to have at the end of our street. It's a bakery first and foremost, selling wonderful pastries, biscuits and cakes – as well as delicious bread from flour they mill themselves. There's also a daily written blackboard menu of confidently executed sharing plates, with their house-made pasta something of a feature. The vibe is relaxed and the friendly service team will ensure you're well looked after. You can find more of the same at their Hornsey Road branch. - Michellen guide.

Apart from posting their menu on the account every day to inform diners, the feed has a very relaxed feel to it and doesn't have a restricted layout that they follow. The type of images they post of the food and location still keep the professional aspect to it, but scattered throughout are photos of the team which again reinforce this community feel that is so important to them.

When researching my ideal consumer I found a main trend of Generation Z and millennials wanting to slow down and find a sense of community lacking in the wider world. In a time of such uncertainty and widespread misinformation from brands, people are looking for honesty as well as authenticity amongst brands, and my aim for this community is to close the gap between brand and consumer and create a space where a new generation can feel connected to the brand's culture.

JOLENE are a small London-based chain of coffee shops and bakeries with sustainability and community at the heart of it, the homely and welcoming atmosphere that is translated through their locations as well as their staff is special and unique in today's oversaturated market. I want to create a JOLENE coffee community in partnership with the charity Mad Millennials that closes the gap between brand and consumer to create a collective of people to fight the loneliness epidemic that has spread amongst a generation. In a time where people are chronically online and disconnected from their own lives the rise of "Generation WE" is pushing for a more empathetic and connected future where people can feel like they are helping each other in this precariousness, and my community aims to bring that to real life.

Despite having several highly-desirable chemical components, used coffee grounds are generally regarded as waste, and they are usually thrown away or composted.

Initiatives have succeeded in using coffee grounds as a substrate for the cultivation of mushrooms (including oyster mushrooms). The use of spent coffee grounds in this application has the advantage of the used coffee grounds needing no pre-treatment to be usable as a mushroom substrate.

Application of 10 kg of coffee grounds per square metre has been suggested as part of a crop rotation system, where for the first six months, the field is allowed to lie fallow with a layer of coffee grounds on it suppressing weed growth. The coffee grounds are ploughed in and legumes are grown, which fix their nitrogen. Application of an equal amount of horse manure at the same time as the coffee grounds has been shown to nearly eliminate the negative effects of fresh-used coffee grounds. It has been proposed to use spent coffee grounds to feed ruminants, pigs, chickens and rabbits, but the high lignin content makes this an undesirable use.

When looking into the ceramics side of my project I found that I was loosing sight of the bigger picture and the community aspect of the project. SO... I have decided that I want to drop the collab idea between Jolene and Lina E and build a community surrounding the already existing customers at Jolene that bring the people together once a month for a coffee meet that will include artists that will be featured at each meeting.

So all in all, my concept is to now build a community-style coffee meet group that centres around the brand Jolene. It will include social events at their branches that customers can sign up for and meet new people, discover new local artists, chat with other coffee fanatics, and most importantly combat loneliness. Building off of this idea of fighting loneliness amongst the new generation, I would like the community to be in partnership with a charity, to do this I now look into other establishments that are doing this already to find the tone of voice of my community.

The goals of MM align with my goals for the community and are a direct reflection of the consumer wants and needs of the developing generation. They identify issues amongst an age group that have been looked down upon and deemed lazy, highlighting real issues such as mental health and loneliness that are prominent today. As well as this, MM's work had predominately been directed at communities just outside of London, and bringing them in the work with the coffee community that I am building will bring their services to the HUGE millennial community that there is in the capital, and more specifically the big millennial following Jolene have already.

I plan for the "meet-ups" to be a casual coffee date style that will guest a new London creative each month leading the talk about their work within the industry but all in all the importance of building a support network with one another. The aim is to build a community of creative coffee lovers who are at the forefront of initiating connections with one another in order to fight the loneliness epidemic amongst a generation through earthly activities. My research into this shows that there is a generational need for finding happiness in the little things to combat the hardships that young people are facing, and I want to do this by tapping into these "little things" to make a big difference.

All in all, younger generations just want to feel like they're being listened to and that is what I want to achieve through creating the coffee community. Starting with a smaller-scale coffee chain like JOLENE will allow me to build a clear idea of what I want for the community and how it will have a more local impact as that is what is wanted by our generation. The ideal target audience is that of JOLENE's already exhibiting customer base, mature Gen Z and millennial London-based people who are looking for a familiar community built off of a love for something so mundane.

I found it hard to encapsulate the core of what the community is for whilst also trying to remain catchy and intruiging to my audience. This is why I took to Snapchat's AI bot to help me come up with names, I simply typed in "give me names for a coffee community" and from the list that was selected there was one that stood out to me... "perk up posse". A bit cringe I know, so I dropped the posse off and just kept the name "Perk Up". I thought that the name was perfect for what I needed, short and sweet and says exactly what the community intends to do, Perk people Up :)

A London-based community group a non-profit set up in 2021 to tackle young adult loneliness through community events, befriending initiatives, awareness campaigns, and social change advocacy. Holding 3-4 events each week around the city including pub quizzes, social walks, board game nights, and picnics the community group was set up by David who struggled to find friends in his adulthood and during the COVID-19 pandemic his long-term relationship ended leaving him divided in the friendship group. He felt as if London was a difficult city to make friends in as an adult, connected in so many ways but also disconnected in so many, and found himself feeling the same when attending social groups and meet ups. He wanted to build his own community of like-minded people who are interested in getting out there and having fun.

Meet like-minded, age appropriate young adults who you could realistically see yourself becoming friends with and who also wanted to make the most of their youth and explore the very best of what London has to offer.

Connect with people keen to do a range of social activities, rather than just one hobby or interest (as we don’t all want to talk for hours about running!).

See the same people regularly, so that connections could build organically and not have to trade numbers, when you haven’t properly yet gotten to know them.

Alongside this David wanted to see a change in the wider community, once holding his first community walk through Hampstead Heath where 12 people attended the community has only grown and with that so have David's ambitions for GFP. The community is now followed by 35,000 young people in their 20's and 30's and some events have up to 200 attendees.

A community bakery that embraces worldly baking techniques, serving modern yet authentic baked goods. Chestnut Bakery was acquired by Sisban Food in 2019 when it was operating as a delivery only brand in Kuwait. Seeing the brand potential, Sisban Food worked alongside the brand founder Chef Ahmed Al Bader to enhance the concept so it could then be positioned as a serious contender to some of the most established bakery brands in London.

This involved making a full revision of the brand’s core values, through embracing a variety of worldwide baking traditions and championing a culture of innovation that brings people together. Sisban believes in the quality of relationships with local communities, so we also work hard with various charities to make a difference in the local neighbourhood in which each bakery operates.

The result is a revamped Chestnut brand that delivers knowledge, craftsmanship, opportunities and benefits to aspiring generations who want to practice the magical art of baking.

I decided to have a featured article for one of my outcomes and find the right kind of magazine to publish my article in to ensure the correct audience is reached and that they match the tone of voice for my community. I wanted a print magazine on a smaller scale that has a real sense of community and purpose behind it, and from this I decided to research into more lifestyle magazines rather than fashion magazines. For my magazine I wanted to publish my article in one that has a relaxed feel to it and promotes a slower way of living as that is what I aim to do with my community, I felt as if this was the most important requirement for the magazine as I want the core of the community to be felt by the right group of individuals.

Topics ranging from sex education to adulthood shifting perspectives and the stylish stoners of the world I liked the way the magazine flowed from beginning to end with beautiful photography and illustrations to compliment the words throughout.

If I were to put my feature article in Broccoli magazine I would want to start the article by talking about the emerging trends of the younger generation and the growing need for a conversation around the loneliness epidemic that is taking over a whole generation. Broccoli likes to stress the importance of community and I think in this sense it would make sense for me to promote the community through their magazine. As well as this, another emerging trend observed is that addressing a niche audience is becoming more normalised, with the over-saturation of trends and aesthetics on social media today tapping into more niche realms is going to be more effective.

For obvious reasons, Broccoli magazine isn't for the average magazine reader, their specialised subject matter applies to those who smoke cannabis or have relaxed views on it, although I do think that my article and subject matter would fit well into the magazine in terms of relatability and the types of people who read Broccoli I think that my article may not directly apply to the subject matter.

For many reasons, I think Kinfolk would be the best magazine to publish my article in, their type of subject matter is more suited to the community that I am trying to promote as well and their readership is in the "young professional" age range which meets my target audience. Having articles in the past that talk about the importance of community, whilst also having built a community group of their own, Kinfolk covers a lot of points I want to meet with my article. Their tone of voice is informative but also placid, discussing modern-day issues in a way that relates to history and politics whilst remaining relatable through the way they talk. Double-page spread dedicated solely to recipes and food appreciation I feel as if my article about PERK UP wouldn't seem out of place here, talking about the positive impact of food on people's lives and uplifting stories about food and its heritage. One of their most recent issues (issue 50) was titled Community because of the importance community has played in keeping the publication alive throughout the years, this is something that I also want to vocalise through my article making it another reason as to why I think Kinfolk would be the best fit.

For my featured article about "PERK UP" I have decided to go with Kinfolk magazine, this is because of the publication's strong sense of community and informative but placid tone of voice. I also feel as if the visual aesthetic of Kinfolk matches that of JOLENES and wouldn't make my article look out of place or that it isn't the type of article that would be featured, as well as this I feel as if my style of writing and choice of subject matter aligns with Kinfolks previous content. The main point I want to get across with this project in general is the need for togetherness and community today through the everyday pleasures and mundane activities, something as simple as a coffee, and I think the best way to communicate this to my target audience is through Kinfolk. Here I have included some articles I read from issue 50 of Kinfolk magazine that was entitled Community which led me to further believe that they would be the best fit. The visual aesthetic of Kinfolk and JOLENE also match very well, the same minimalist but raw visuals portraying a very honest outlook on life.

The idea is to bring people together through the mundane things that people already love to do, in a way that is educational and creates real connections between brand and consumer. Holding live events on the last Sunday of every month, the 4-hour session allows attendees to come and enjoy speciality coffee as well as seasonal pastries selected by the team at JOLENE and interact with other like-minded individuals who appreciate simplicity. The event includes a talk from people working within different creative industries giving their insight into the industry today, as well as the future of sustainability within the industry, each event will have a different guest holding the talk. A portion of each sale made at the events will be donated to Mad Millennials and will help them to continue the conversation surrounding younger generational loneliness.

Today the younger generation faces an influx of communities and clubs that are centred around going out and drinking or competitiveness, finding it hard to find a space in which they can connect with one another in a more mundane and natural setting. It's important that Gen Z and Millennials are able to find space where they can continue to grow within themselves as the world around them is continuing to change the trajectory of their future, facing important issues like global warming and the cost of living crisis, the younger generation needs a space where they feel supported and free to express these concerns.

JOLENE is always used as an example to paint the picture of obnoxious individuals @socks_house_meeting observes, overpriced coffee drinkers who shop at Broadway Market and walk their miniature dachshund around London Fields. Id say because of this they probably bring in the same demographic of consumers as JOLENE, late gen Z/ millennials with disposable income :)

To hear that they are introducing things like Too Good To Go in their stores to help with reducing co2 emissions. Both JOLENE and Chestnut are sustainability conscious small businesses trying to make a difference starting with the community around them, this leads me to believe that both businesses would probably have the same type of consumer/demographic. Although, I feel as if Chestnuts consumer may be slightly different due to the location of their bakery being in Belgravia Covent Garden area, leads me to believe that their customers may be different aesthetic to those of JOLENE.

The responses for this question showed that the majority of people relied on hobbies as a way of escapism, and the answers showed that people find it reasonably to extremely important and use it as a way to help their mental health. One response specified "Otherwise all the energy I would use in my hobby goes into overthinking", this links back directly into my trend research showing that our generation has this sense of "impending doom" and is finding ways to distract themselves from what is going on. Others answered by saying that they have hobbies to keep themselves busy, saying that it gives them a structure to their day and provides them with moments where they can "sit and be with my thoughts" which I thought was quite sweet and shows that more young people today are practising mindfulness due to the increased awareness around mental health today.

Do you feel as if there are enough community space for this generation (in London)?

No, no and more no's where answered to this question in particular. A few of my responses said that they felt as if the community groups for this generation are mainly centred around drinking and going out culture, which is good in moderation but when people want to build real meaningful connections isn't always the case. This gave me insight as to what my USP is for my community, it gives the younger generation a space that isn't centred around going out, a fresh space where we can talk about pressing issues that are continuing to be piled upon us. Another thing people specified was that they felt as if there may be community spaces out there but they didn't know how to find them, this gave me a better understanding of what I would need to do to get word out there about my community, engaging with them not just through social media as that tends to ebb and flow with how the content reaches. TikTok and Instagrams algorithm tends to hit peoples feeds for a short amount of time but before you know it its on to the next best thing and people have moved on, that's why I think when promoting my community I want to collect attendees through physical promotion, using leaflets and posters as well as stamp cards.

A lot of the responses for this question were one worded answered, people agreeing and saying "100%". People specifically mentioned social media and the all while good parts the negative impact that it has had on this generation, saying that "social media constantly makes all feel like we are connected and know what our friends are up to but we haven't really checked up on one another" pushing that point further of real connections and the importance. As well as this, people pointed out that they felt as if the cost of living was having an effect on them being able to find and meet people, not having enough money to go out and enjoy the things that your peers are doing because you cannot afford it, my responses showed that people felt as if this has let to them feel secluded from the rest. Meeting people should mean having to spend a lot, this is something that I also want to push for "PERK UP", other than the price of a coffee or pastry (if you fancy) "PERK UP" is a relatively affordable community, and I aim for a portion of the proceeds to be donated to charity anyway so people feel like they are actually helping by spending their money rather than feeling guilty about it.

But, other answers showed otherwise, saying that other than there friends and university they didn't feel part of a community. I think the responses to this quesition showed me that what people view as community are so different and what it may be for one person it isn't for another, but this just gave me further reasoning as to why this community space is necessary. I want people to feel assured that by joining "PERK UP" they are joining a community and it'll feel like such, they won't have to wonder whether they feel like part of one or not.

The responses for this question were all along the same line of feeling scared for out futures etc, giving me further confirmation as to what I have been writing and researching about. It also gives me a greater awareness to the generational shift to the view on the government and politics in general, some people going into more specific detail that others, but the general consensus is that people are scared by our political state and government and find it really hard to picture a future in somewhere like the UK where it is so uncertain.

Do you think social media has played a part in the way our generation views and talks about political and societal issues?

"Yes, i think social media provides a platform to educate people and a much wider audience. it can be a place for people to speak out! However, in the same sense, it is easy for things to be twisted and misunderstood through social media and some people can use it in the wrong ways" I think this response summarises what the general feeling is from our generation, that people are grateful for social media for its educational purposes but are unsure by the amount of misunderstand information that is out there today. Social media has given our generation a platform to use our voices to speak up on issues that matter to us, it has also allowed us (not always positively) to see a different side to our world that western media had tried to hide for so long. My responses showed that people felt like "people could easily get stuck in echo chambers" something that I think has also contributed to the saturated state of the media, everyone is able to have a voice now because of platforms like TikTok especially, making it harder for people to be able to hold in their opinions. The responses to this question are definitely useful in terms of giving me a better understanding of the generalised view of social media and the role it plays in our generation talking about real world issues, they are definitly going to help me further when writing my article.

"From speaking to my friends and family I think of success as happiness rather than an excessive amount of money. I think this generation prioritises quality of life over money but there is a lot of pressure to be successful in a high paying job still."

"Yes definitely. I feel like there definitely is a shift in comparison to even our parents generation. I think people just value and see more importance in different things now. I think in previous generations there was this set structure of what success is whereas i feel like we see more oppurtunity now and it isnt such a set thing, it can be more independant and relative to the person!"

"Somewhat, many value having a fulfilled life although many still rate success by the amount of money they make"

"Yes, success is now 500k followers and a brand deal"

The responses for this questioned varied, majority relating to the research that I have already found, stating that they thought our generation's view on success was more individual and that people aren't following society's expectations of success as they have previous years, shying away from financial success and redefining it in terms of happiness and quality of life. But, then other responses showed that people now see success in terms of social media and fame showing that even today peoples wants and values for their future still vary. This is very helpful for my project and shows that there is a generational need to slow down and redefine the stereotypically view of what being successful is.

Do you feel affected by the over-saturation of "influencers" on platforms like TikTok and Instagram? Do you feel as if they make expectations for yourself higher?

"Yes but as an influencer myself I feel conflicted about this. There’s an over saturation of the same type of influencer (white able bodied cis etc etc) and the consumer continuously platforms and engages with them instead of diverging away from these creators to other types. In turn, this makes me feel like I have to be perfect / the most put together, in order to appease the white consumer. It’s an unattainable goal and reality yet it is requisite for “success”"

"I don’t feel like I higher my expectations off of influencers but I can definitely see why it would have an effect in some people when you see people living these “perfect lives” you start to look at your own and doubt that your doing well"

"I hate it, I appreciate content creators and storytellers but influencers sometimes seem a bit silly"

"Yes, some influencers are damaging in the unrealistic lifestyles and behaviour they portray. They rob reality for a lot of people."

The responses to this question show that there are definitely mixed opinions when it comes to influencers and the effects they have had on our generation's expectations of themselves, many feel as if the type of influencers that are about today create unrealistic lifestyle expectations. When influencers were just emerging on social media beauty and fashion were at the forefront of what people were consuming, early Youtuber's like Zoella showing people her makeup and hair routine, but influencing today is so much more than that. People have learnt from previous years that there is a lot of money to be made in terms of influencing, selling a product by showing yourself integrating it into your life for a 30-second clip for it then to never be used by that person again, it feels as though influencer culture is being used as a promotional tool more than ever and people are starting to feel the disingenuous path that it is taking. As well as this, influencers today are promoting a lifestyle, picture-perfect brunches, aesthetically pleasing shopping days with their besties and pub nights with multitudes of friends, these types of images and videos can have just as an effect on peoples mental wellbeing. Selling a lifestyle of jam-packed, friend-filled excursions is making our generation feel more and more left behind, feeling this urge to go out and post about it to prove that you are also "living the dream". I think this has gotten worse over the years, especially surrounding influencer culture in London, people are feeling like they aren't doing as much as those they see on social media when really its all just a social strategy to get people to engage with their content.

Here I have experimented with layout and making sure that the style matches that of Kinfolks. Using space to my advantage, I have kept images minimal and selected a range from JOLENE's Instagram that I think best shows my community and what it's about, I didn't want to use too many of my illustrations in this part as I felt as if it didn't match the aesthetic. From flicking through some pages of Kinfolk on the internet I can tell they have a minimalist feel, this is something that I didn't want to shy from and keep the text at the forefront of the double page, with images to back this up.
