Sparta

Sparta was known for being strict and war-like. the caste system was super important. Women had a lot of freedoms but were required to stay home and have children. Once a year, the Spartans declare war on the helots, who were prisoners of war.

Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great was a military genius who was born in Macedonia around 356 B.C. His father was Philip II, and he took over when his father was assasinated. He wanted to conquer or "unite" Greece and to defeat Persia and remove them from Europe. He ended up conquering Persia, Egypt, and Mesopotamia in a decade or so. He wanted to continue, but his troops didn't want to. In the end, he got sick and died at 32.

Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar was a Roman emperor who rose to power through political judgements and military victories. He ended up taking control of rome and forming the "First Triumvirate" with Crassus and Pompey. He declared himself dictator of Rome, which had the negative effect of him being assassinated by some senators who claimed they wanted to return to a "republic" Rome. Essensially, people began to think that Julius was becoming a little too power hungry.

Socrates

Socrates challenged people to think for themselves. he believed that all people possess knowledge, you just have to find it. He founded the Socratic method, which is the question-answer format children learn to use in school. Socrates was later executed by the Athenian Authorities.

The Roman Empire was ruled by Augustus "Octavian" starting in 27 BC. he claimed to have restored the republic but had the power of a dictator. In Rome, family members were deemed rulers and murdering them to get power was very common.

The Crusades

The Crusades were a series of battles between the Christians and the Muslims over what they believed to be their holy land, Jerusalem. These battles began when Turks captured Jerusalem and didn't let Christians enter the city.With 9 total battles, the first Crusades were the only wins for the Christians. The Catholic Church declared that anybody fighting in battle will receive a pass into heaven.

The Bubonic Plague

The Bubonic Plague was a mass pandemic happening in the mid-12th century. Out of a population of 75 million people, around 2/3 of them died. The Plague was spread by fleas biting infected rats. Once the rats died, the fleas had to find other hosts, such as humans! Some impacts include less trade, poverty, anti-semitism, and more.

Joan of Arc

She ended up being captured by the English and was tortured by inquisition (witchcraft). She helped the war to be in France's favor which made her become a matyr.

John Wycliffe

Because of this, he decided to translate the Bible from Latin to English so more people could read and interpret it. Since the popes were mainly the only ones who knew Latin, they could interpret it how they chose to keep their power.
