  • The Kachina religion is the core of many traditional Pueblo beliefs. 
  • This philosophy believes hundreds of ancestral spirits known as Kachinas live and communicate with the tribes for half of the year. 
  • Pueblo people who practice Kachina religion perform rituals while wearing ornate masks, this represents Kachina spirits being able to communicate with spirit beings.
  • Some major Kachina spirits include Earth Father and Earth Mother and a serpent god who is believed to control the rain.
  • The Pueblos are also known for their pottery.

  • Before the Spanish arrived, the government of the Pueblo Indians was controlled by the priesthood. 
  • The religious leaders controlled such things as:  
  • War and peace
    •    • Witchcraft
       • Hunting
       • Husbandry
    • The people of the village would not have power
    • The rules and laws were based on the traditional understandings 
    • There were different societal exceptions and so  social classes were all different from one another  
    • Today each village has a government made up of clan leaders, who would share the work of governing the village .
    • Clans would appoint leaders who will speak for the clan members and would meet as the village council to make laws and important decisions

  • The Pueblo Indians were located in the southwest part called the Mesa Verde region.
    • This region was Located in a special area called the "Four Corners". It was named this way because its the only part of the United States where the corners of 4 states meet. 
      1. Colorado
      2. Utah
      3. Arizona
      4. New Mexico 
    • Did they Migrate?
    • At first the migrated to the Mesa Verde region due to their nomadic lifestyle.
    • Later on throughout many years they scattered throughout Colorado, and New Mexico because they wanted to return to their ancient homeland.

  • They had understood the importance of nature in providing them the necessity's in life and would be taught to respect  their surroundings and environment 
  • They believed in kachinas , powerful spirits that controlled nature,  and would pray to them in their daily lives for help in Kivas. 
  • in the creation myth they believed the pueblo people had lived in the underground,  in a holy place called Sipapu, and would climb up through a hole on  earth into the sunlight 
  • The Father and Earth Mother god  would show them how to farm the land, grow corn, and build their houses and would give the people twin sons to watch over them and help them with wars. 
  • Some ceremonies that were practiced were they had ritual clowns to remind the people of their foolish behavior.

  • Women owned the house and property was passed down from mother to daughter. Women were considered the most important in the tribe's society. 
  •  Women were in charge of the house, caring for the children, gathering berries and nuts, and also took part in religious and political aspects of the tribe The men were responsible for hunting, farming, protection, and participated in the government. 
  • Marriages and divorces were common in the tribe
  • Men and women would meet during kivas and would talk about their troubles to one another.

    • Due to settlement not near water sources
      • Transportation was walking or used dogsleds when transporting goods
    • Common goods they grew include corn, beans, cotton, tobacco, squash, and sunflowers 
      • Used hollow gourds to store food
    • Traded with the Comanche and Navajos 
  • Would trade for shells, turquoise, and corals for crafts
    • Famous for delicate necklaces and amazing pottery
  • Spanish brought over goats, horses, sheep, and cows.
    • Used these to make clothes out of wool
    • Before they used cotton and animal hide to make clothing

  • Goal: to convert Pueblo's to Christianity
    • Pueblo's showed resistance and led to the Pueblo Revolt
    • 1680: Pueblo push Spanish out
      • 1st Native American tribe to ever accomplish this 
      • 1692: Continuing to live in peace
  • The pueblo religion was suppressed and some were sold into slavery.
  • Later, Pueblo territory came under the Mexican government and then eventually the American government
