Pack small.  Travel light.   Remember this you'll be alright! Buy clothes at thrift stores and leave for someone else when you don't need it... 
2. When sitting on railway steps wondering what to do next -  pop your leg through a shoulder strap. Helps keep your bag with you :)
3. Take a few strips of T.P from the hostel and keep in a zip lock bag along with a mini Tylenol full of a mixture of most needed things for emergencies.(pain relief + charcole tab + dramamine tabs) energy bar, mini water bottle and ear-plugs.
4.  Enjoy the journey
5. Don't complain about anything! You're a guest
6. Speak as much as the local lingo as you can!
7. Mix planned with unplanned. Airports are good when nothing else is open, but good to avoid turning up randomly to find a festival in full swing and no where to stay!
8. Have fun

The amount of knowledge and wisdom that you gain will truly be measureless. There will be ups and downs, peaks and valleys, but if you are always open and willing to learn, I guarantee you that you will find what you're looking for. 

Also, I dare you to learn 5-10 words in every language you encounter.
