Being kind and being nice are two very different things. Growing up we’re not really taught the difference between the two, but there is. Doing an act of kindness has a greater impact on the world because I’m doing it out of the goodness of my heart instead of doing it for something in return (which is an act of niceness). If we all strive to do acts of kindness then we’ll constantly be helping others and it would come back in return (what goes around comes around).

In social studies we learned about different women who made a stand for equality between men and women. Learning about the action they took and what rights they helped for women to have today makes me have a different perspective on situations and be grateful for the opportunities I have today. For example, I’m more grateful when I go to sports and get to compete in school because women before didn’t get that opportunity. I also appreciate being able to go to a great school like Mid-Pacific and getting the chance to get a good education. Being more thankful for opportunities and rights I have has helped me to be a more grateful person because I look at situations as the glass half full. So if I had a bad practice, I say to myself “at least I get the chance to even play sports, some women didn’t get that” and then I’m happy again. The same goes for school. If a class doesn’t go well or I get frustrated on getting too much homework, I tell myself “some women didn’t even get the chance to go to a good school and get a good education”. Through my research I also learned that feminism isn’t about women having more rights than men, rather that men and women are equal. With that in mind, I can continue the work that the women before me started.

In the Keep That Can Cool Lab project, we were trying to build penguin shelters for penguins to live in since they’re having a hard time staying cool with all the global warming we’ve caused. The Keep That Can Cool Lab helped me to learn more about heat and how global warming affects not only us, but the animals and plants too. It showed me that the actions we do today affects our tomorrow (like Mr. Nakamoto said in his presentation). The trash I make and throw away will end up in landfill and make our atmosphere full of greenhouse gases. This will make our atmosphere hotter and cause ice caps to melt. Not only will the ice caps melt, but the sea level will rise (due to the ice caps). So this even affects humans because there’ll be less land for humans to live on and then we could end the human race (just like how melting ice caps have made other species go extinct). Now I try to use less single waste plastics and more reusable containers. And if I do end up having to use a plastic bag, I try to reuse it at least more than two times. Through my research from this project I learned that the global warming we’ve caused can be reversed, but by 2030 we won’t be able to change it. So instead of waiting for tomorrow to fix the problem, make a change today, we don’t have much time left.

In the Nice vs. Kind character strong lesson I learned that being nice is when you do something for someone to get something in return and a kind act is when you do something from the goodness of your heart. Knowing the difference between being kind and nice impacts me in life because it helps me to classify people who do things for something in return vs. someone who’s a good person and does it because it’s their character. This information helps me to know when someone is actually nice or if they’re just being nice because I did something nice for them. It also helps me to appreciate it more when someone does an act of kindness because they had no intention of receiving something in return, they just wanted to help. Not only will keeping this in mind help me to differentiate kind acts and nice acts, but it can help me to try to be more kind instead of nice. It’s always good to work for a goal in life and a good goal for me right now is to spread more kind acts (especially with all the bad going on in the world). One small act of kindness can’t change the world, but it can mean the world for someone else.
