An abrasion is a wound caused by skin rubbing against tuff surface resulting in scraping away of the skin. Initial care, wash the wound gently with soap and water, remove dirt or debris with sterile tweezers, apply an antibiotic ointment and cover with a clean bandage. Post care: Change dressing daily or when it becomes wet/dirty, monitor for infection, referral rarely needed unless abrasion is extensive or contaminated.
