Given that the student has moved around so much he will not have a sense of stability, when we consider this student Maslow's hierarchy of needs should be considered, if those basic needs are not met it will not matter why the student chooses not to engage with peers or staff, they are just in survival mode.

It can be very difficult when one is still learning to know themselves to find their likes and dislikes when its a risk to be different from all the other students.
Angie Thompson: The root issue is a mismatch between his learning style and his teacher's expectations for correct answers instead of creative thought. He’s creative, independent, and naturally questions everything. But instead of that being seen as a strength, it’s treated like defiance. The compliance-based classroom structure feels rigid to him and is a mismatch with his creative style. When he isn’t given room to explore ideas deeply, he shuts down in subjects that don’t interest him.

This student’s underachievement feels tied to instability and unmet emotional needs. Moving from school to school probably created academic gaps and made it hard to build relationships. Add in what seems like a chaotic home life, and school may feel more like survival than learning.

What’s interesting is that he clearly has strengths — he loves words and studies vocabulary for fun. But because his interests don’t look traditional (like reading classics), no one is nurturing that talent. He thinks he’s smart, but he hates school. That’s a big red flag.

The likely root causes here are lack of belonging, lack of stability, and no adult stepping in to recognize and grow his verbal strengths.

He demonstrates exceptional memory and a strong interest in history, yet perceives school as irrelevant and unstimulating.

This student is underachieving, because he disdains school. He is not challenged or engaged. This may be as a result of poor learning experiences, where he has learned that teachers see him as a pain and other students don't understand him, or this could be a student who is wired to be oppositional. Either way, this student is not motivated to do work in subjects he finds boring and is unlikely to respond well to rules or authoritarian adults.

This student’s underachievement likely stems from a mismatch between his learning needs and the structure of the classroom. He is highly creative and intellectually curious, but the rigid, routine-based instruction limits his ability to explore topics in depth or pursue his interests. Because he thrives when given choice and autonomy, the lack of flexibility leads to boredom and disengagement. His tendency to question authority and prefer open-ended thinking over single “correct” answers also creates conflict with a more traditional teaching style. Over time, this disconnect between his learning style and classroom expectations results in frustration for both the student and the teacher, reinforcing his disengagement and inconsistent performance.

Constant moves prevent him from building friendships or feeling connected which leads to isolation and feeling like an outsider. His home situation also appears unstable which likely affects his focus and consistency in school. Even though he is clearly capable and shows strong interest in reading and vocabulary school feels disconnected from his interests and experiences. Because of this mismatch he disengages develops a dislike for school and his performance continues to decline over time eventually leading to repeated failure and dropout.

This student’s underachievement is related to gaps in foundational academic skills despite strong thinking abilities. Being homeschooled has supported her creativity and strengths in reading, problem solving, and imaginative play but may have contributed to uneven skill development in more structured areas like spelling, math, and writing mechanics. She shows clear intellectual potential but struggles with basic academic tools such as handwriting, number recall, and language accuracy which makes tasks frustrating and inconsistent for her. Because she often relies on others to record her ideas her written output does not fully reflect her thinking ability. These skill weaknesses interfere with her ability to demonstrate what she knows leading to lower academic performance despite strong cognitive strengths.

This student’s underachievement is connected to social pressure and a desire to fit in. Although he was identified as gifted early on and shows strong abilities in math and technology he has gradually shifted toward average performance. He takes on responsible roles like managing the school server and sound systems which shows capability and trustworthiness but his academic effort does not match his potential. In a school environment where standing out can lead to bullying he appears to intentionally downplay his achievement to avoid attention. As a result he chooses minimum effort over academic excellence even though he is fully capable of higher performance.

This student’s underachievement is linked to strong disengagement and negative attitudes toward school. He shows clear ability in areas like history and memorization, but most of the curriculum does not feel meaningful or interesting to him. Because of this disconnect, he becomes bored, frequently tardy, and resistant to school expectations. His frustration with authority often leads to conflict with teachers and peers which further damages his school experience. Instead of putting effort into improving weaker areas like math he tends to reject school demands altogether.
