  • Biology*-The study of life 
  • Ecology*- The study of the interactions between living and non-living things in an environment 
  • Abiotic factor*- non-living thing/factor in an environment 
  • Biotic factor*-living thing/factor in an environment 
  •  Limiting factor*- A resource that stops or slows the growth of a population 
  • Carrying capacity*- The number of living organisms an area can support and give basic needs to  
  • Density Dependent Factor*- Affect the size of population growth based on limiting factors such as availability of food, predation, disease, and competition, resources. 
  •  Density Independent Factor*- Affect the size of population growth based on limiting factors such as; weather, natural disasters, human activities. 
  • Biodiversity*- Variety in the interactions and number of living things in a given area 
  •  Ecosystem*- All the living and nonliving things in an environment 
  •  Community*- interacting group of various species in a common location 
  •  Population*- One type of living thing in an ecosystem 
  •  Organism*- an individual living thing, such as a plant, animal, bacterium, protest, or fungus. 
  •  Species*- a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomial, e.g. Homo sapiens. 
  •  Keystone Species*- A species that has an unusually large effect/impact on its ecosystem 
  • Pollinator*- is an animal that moves pollen from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma of a flower .i.e Bee or butterfly 
  •  Omnivore*- An animal that consumes both plants and animals to gain energy & matter. 
  •  Carnivore*- An animal that consumes other animals to gain energy & matter. 
  •  Herbivore*- An organism that mostly feeds on plants &fungi to gain energy & matter. 
  •  Detritivore*- is an organism that eats dead or decaying plants or animals as food. i.e. microorganisms such as bacteria and larger organisms such as fungi, insects, worms, and some crustaceans. 
  •  Decomposer*-An organism that breaks down, but does not consume, dead organisms 
  •  Competition*- When there is a limited supply of a resource an organism must fight over it 
  •  Prey*- An animal being hunted, caught, and eaten by another animal  
  •  Predator*- An animal that captures and feeds on the other organism that serves as the prey  
  •  Predation (Predator-prey relationship)*-the interaction between predator and prey which influences organisms at two ecological levels 
  •  Symbiosis*- A relationship between two different species  
  •  Parasitism*- A relationship that benefits one species and harms the other 
  •  Mutualism*- A relationship that benefits both species involved 
  •  Commensalism*- A relationship that benefits one species and neither harms nor benefits the other 
  •  Simple food chain*- A series of organisms showing how each living thing gets energy & matter from its food 
  •  Food web*- A network of food chains by which energy & matter is passed from one species to another through a series of interactions. 
  •  Autotroph (producer) * an organism that produces their own food through photosynthesis (light or chemical energy) 
  •  Heterotroph (consumer)*- An organism that cannot produce its own food. Gets its energy & matter by eating plants or animals for food. 
  •  Anthropogenic effect- negative human impact on environment/world 
  •  Combustion of fossil fuels- burning of fossil fuels i.e. coal, oil and natural gas 
  •  Carbon Reservoir/sink*- plants and ocean/bodies of water that absorb carbon (CO2) 
  •  Habitat- The area or natural environment in which an organism or population lives 
  •  Adaptation- are special features through structure and function that allow a plant or animal to live in a particular place or habitat. 
  •  Endangered species- any species that is at risk of extinction because of a sudden rapid decrease in its population or a loss of its critical habitat. 
  •  Invasive species- is an organism that causes ecological or economic harm in a new environment where it is not native due to lack of natural predators in new area. 
  •  Immigration of a species- animal establishes a home in a habitat because it has resources it can utilize or because the habitat is ideal for them 
  •  Emigration of a species- an animal leaves its home because the habitat is no longer ideal for them and they need to find a more suitable environment.
