Early Literacy in Preschool and Kindergarten, 3rd Edition

This is a book that recommends methods of organizing centres and activities based on previous research conducted on the learning of children. The activities and the information that the book provides helps teachers and parents learn strategies in which to enhance the literacy learning of children as well as fine motor skills. Studies show that children who go to learning centres to play will help their vocabulary skills and development (Pelletier, p.1, 2011). This is mainly because as students play with centres or with toys prepared by parents or guardians, they can be asked to communicate what they are doing. This helps the students express their opinion on a topic and learn new words and information depending on what they are playing with. Also, allowing children to have access to activities associated with literacy allows them to be aware that there is more to literacy learning than just reading a book (Roskos, p.52, 2003). It is also to enjoy elements of the book by actively playing with them. Children learn a lot through their senses, therefore by activating all senses through these activities, they will develop more knowledge in literacy.

Alphabet Soup

Alphabet Soup is an active game for children. In it it contains letters of the alphabet. With these, children have the ability to do many things. They can learn the alphabet letters, they can learn to pronounce the letters, they can trace the letters and they can even make words with them. Learning letters and the sound they make allows the child to recognize these letters when reading (Pelletier, p.2, 2011). With this, teachers or parents and guardians have the ability to encourage the child to familiarize themselves with the way that letters look. They can guide the child to make words with these letters based on the sound that letters make when together. When familiarized with the letters, children may form words that they have previously seen in their life. This helps children recognize where they see letters and words. This recognition is what helps children develop their reading abilities by learning to recognize words in a book or even recognize the sound of letters together which forms new words which further expands the ability and knowledge of the child.

A to Zoo: Subject Access to Children's Picture Books, 10th Edition by Rebecca L. Thomas

A to Zoo is a resource that is much needed for parents guardians and teachers. This is a book that contains titles of picture books in which individuals can acquire to read to their child. This book covers a large variety of subjects and includes books with activities as well. This is very useful for individuals who are not sure which book to choose from and are looking for a specific topic. Reading books is an integral part of children literacy development. If stories are read to children, they will build favourite books which will increase their motivation to want to read them on their own (Roskos, 2003, p.2). Books can remind children of their home environments (Tolentino, 2013, p.11) which can make them have more interest in certain books increasing their development of literature. If a child increases interest and motivation to read a book, a child will familiarize themselves further with the book which will allow them to recognize and know the words associated with the images of the book. Therefore, this is when the book A to Zoo becomes in handy as individuals may use it to find books associated to a particular interest of a child and this will increase their motivation to read and to learn how to read.

Basic Signing Vocabulary Cards

Basic Signing Vocabulary Cards are cards that allows students to visualize the symbols in order to teach them sign language. This is useful for students that are visual learners and that need to observe actions in order to remember words. Using sign language during a read aloud of a book allows students or children to better visualize the story which help them memorize these words (Proveda, 2008, p.2). This is also a helpful tool for parents, guardians and teachers as well as for children to use in order to learn words and signs to communicate words or stories to children that are deaf. This gives the opportunity for children to learn signs, as well as to include children who are deaf into the shared story (Proveda, 2008, p.2). Learning these signs allows all children to familiarize themselves with new words and allows all children to increase literacy abilities. Not only do children increase their literacy skills from this, but it is a fun way to rein act a story with signs in which parents, guardians and teachers learn how to sign words. This is a crucial tool that increases inclusion and expands literacy capacities in all individuals using the signs.

Epic!

Epic is an app for Ipads or smartphones. In this app, individuals can find books for all age groups, activities relating to books, games, read alouds and books of various languages. This is helpful for kids as they can use their senses such as touch, hearing and visual senses in order to learn and read the books (Semingson, 2017, p.31). This app allows parents to guide their child through stories which is also helpful for the child to make connections of the story told by their parents and the images seen by the book. The app also has the ability to read the story to the child. This is helpful because the child may remember words when they see the words often and hear the word multiple times. Also, this app can obtain activities for preschoolers that increase their recognition of alphabet letters (Semingson, 2017, p.31) which will later help them in recognizing these letters and sounds in their reading. This is an engaging and fun app that can create bonding between parent/guardian and child while increasing the learning of the child in an interactive way.

Ending Sounds 3-in-a-Row Game

Ending Sounds is an interactive activity for children who are beginning to recognize words before starting kindergarten. It is an activity in which children can play with other individuals or that parents can play with children to practice their phonetic skills. This activity is like a game of bingo. However, children have to spin the spinners which directs them to a letter. The child then has to find which item on their card that has the ending sound of the letter found on their spinners. This practices children to recognize items from a picture and to practice phonetics which helps in decoding which is when children associate sounds with words (Pelletier, 2011, p.2). Also, the learning of new words expands the vocabulary of children which helps them understand more easily what they are seeing or reading (Pelletier, 2011, p.2-3). Therefore this is a simple activity in which many children enjoy playing with each other where they learn to associate letter sounds to words as well as to communicate with each other in a somewhat competitive way.

Literacy Beginnings: A Prekindergarten Handbook by Gay Su Pinnell and Irene C. Fountas

Literacy Beginning is a great resources for pre kindergarten children. This is a book in which parents, guardians and teachers can use in order to find ideas to engage children in activities that will enhance their literacy interest and abilities. This book includes activities, songs, books and strategies to engage children. In fact, the book includes many activities in which children are encouraged to colour, write and scribble. This helps children realize that in order to insert their ideas on a paper they can write and draw them (Baghban, 2007, p.22). Allowing a child to make a story in a drawing while the adult is writing their thoughts allows children to express themselves verbally which will increase their vocabulary (Baghban, 2007, p.22) which is yet another form of early literacy development. As this book also gives activities that allow children to write, they develop their motor abilities in order to practice writing letters which will help them form words that they will eventually recognize in their environmental print. Therefore, having this book in hand is important as it creates many opportunities for adults to indulge with their child in order to develop their vocabulary and recognition of words and sentences in fun methods!

Scholastics

Scholastic is one of the best resources for adults who want their child to indulge in a world of literacy. Scholastics can be viewed on their website or you can order magazines. They offer a variety of choices or suggestions for adults to order books in which they can read with their child depending on the topic or type of book parents, guardians or teachers are looking for. They have a vast number of book suggestions particularly for children that are preschool age. As Scholastic offers a large variety of books, adults will likely choose books that are culturally relevant. As children are reading books that are relevant to their lives, they become more attuned to the language which will help them make personal references to what they see in books from their environments (Tolentino, 2013, p.11). Also, scholastics provides choices of books that can encourage children to read with the adult. This is a big step in the early literacy of the child as it allows the child to increase their vocabulary by learning to pronounce words properly with guidance (Tolentino, 2013, p.11). Therefore, with its large book choice selection, scholastics allows adults to choose books to encourage reading as well as increasing support and quality time that children will spend with adults while reading.

ABC Mouse App

ABC mouse is an application that adults can access for their child. It is an application that contains multiple games related to the alphabet, words, and it even contains games of math and geography. Here a child has the ability to manipulate a tablet and to enjoy fun interactive game with the support of the adult all while learning. The application has many games that include the learning of letters of the alphabet. This is important for children in order to have visualizations from their games of each letter which will make it more easily recognizable (Semingson, 2017, p.31) when placed within words or sentences. This application also helps the parents or guardians keep track of what the child is learning by seeing which games they have played. The application also includes games of drawings. This is important because visualizing the items can be important for the literacy of the child as they learn the name of the item they are colouring and this results in recognition of visual print (Pelletier, 2011, p.2). Therefore, the app, even though it is an electronic tool, helps children learn more about the alphabet and its use in life which will aid in their development while using their senses to learn in a fun way.

Alphabet Stamps are a great tool in the learning of children. These are simply stamps of the letters of the alphabet. This is a helpful tool as it allows children to learn the letters of the alphabet as they use the stamps. They can come in a colourful collection which makes them attractive and fun to use for kids. Not only do children learn about the alphabet while using these but they can also stamp out familiar words to them which can help them recognize these words in sentences or from the environment. This also helps children with phonics. It does this by allowing children to use these letters to form words based on how they might sound to them (Hornsby, 2014, p.13). These stamps can also make children more aware of the letters when they encounter them in their surroundings. This will increase their probability to write using appropriate letters based on the sound that the words make as well as looking at these letters in the environment. These colourful stamps are a great way for parents, guardians and teachers to help children increase this knowledge and it is a tactile activity that children enjoy.
