" At the second stop, they heard the grateful cries of their neighbors as they were led from the other boxcar. But pound as they might on the slats, their own door remained shut."(85) Was this a punishment for them speaking out earlier, or was it just their turn to be locked in?

Now that the villagers had time to think about what is going on they are starting to realize things and events that have happened to others. This of course is creating more fear for everyone. " But whatever it was, the villagers were made to lie down in trenches, like herring, head to foot. And then, Lord God, they were slaughtered as they lay there, by soldiers with machine guns." (80)Some people are hesitant to believe that these stories are true.

As soon as the car stopped and the soldiers started unloading the villagers everyone could share the characterization of fear as the soldiers started treating them poorly. "When no one moved the soldiers raised their guns. Shmuel put his hand on the raised panel and leaped down." (73) Maybe some people will start to believe what Hannah has been saying.

" But first Shmuel, then Yitzchak, then several other men in their truck joined in, singing at the top of their voices. the children on their perches clapped in rhythm."(71) Each is using the song to lighten the dreary mood and distract their minds from the fear of what is yet to come.

"Better the fox to guard the hens and the wolves to guard the sheep," the badchan said."(69) He is stating that the villagers are the hens or the sheep and the Nazi's are the foxes and the wolves. He is stating that the Nazis guarding them will not have any better of an outcome than a fox or wolf watching over hens or chickens.

It is clear to see that the Nazi's in this story are seen as the antagonists for they are hurting all of the characters physically and emotionally. It is also taught in history classes, as shown by Hannah's flashbacks, that the Nazi party was never seen as good people."Leave them! a soldier said, slamming his rifle butt into Shmuel's shins. "Get Down."(86)

All the villagers are facing the same external conflict. The Nazi's are using force to make them to do what they want. This conflict also links to the internal conflict of listening for safety, or facing the consequences of what will happen if they disobey.

The Nazi's were cunning and tricked the villagers into getting into the vans by lying and force. "Nevertheless," the colonel continued, smiling, "in this matter, we will make the ruling. When you get to your new homes, anyone who wants to work will be treated humanely. The tailor will sew, the shoemaker will have his last. And you will be happy among your own people, just as we will be happy you have followed the government's orders."(69) He makes it sound like they will be treated humanely, but in the end they are treated terribly.

This is not one of your stories that ends happy-ever-after."(70)
