 The architecture of the limas house emphasizes the aspects of ventilation, lighting and safety.  The limas house is built quite high from the ground to avoid getting water during the flood or wild beasts of the night.  The house of Limas has no porch and is in the front.  The carvings or networks that are available on each window do not just work as decoration but also to facilitate light and air into the house.

Pola baju belah panjang ini masih bersifat ‘mengurungkan’ anggota badan. Secara tradisi potongannya labuh sehingga buku lali. Cuma bezanya ia berbelah dan berpesak di hadapan baju ini, umumnya dipakai sebagai pakaian di luar rumah atau upacara rasmi. Baju belah panjang ini terkenal di Melaka, Perak, Selangor dan Kedah-Perlis. Baju kurung belah ini kemudiannya dikenali sebagai ‘baju panjang’ dan ‘kebaya panjang’. Tradisi ini berkembang menjadi kebaya dan bertangan panjang berpesak lurus di hadapan, berkekek dan berbelah dada yang ditutup dengan kancing atau kerongsang tiga.

As the mosque's architect, Tuan Haji Mohamed Arif bin Punak set out to recreate colonial EnglishVictorian architecture as noted by the minarets that take the form of British 19th century clocktowers. The mosque also features some Moorish architecture elements, along with some minor Malayinfluence. Tuan Haji Mohamed Arif bin Punak was supervised by the Johor government engineer Dato' Yahya bin Awalluddin who communicated the Anglophile sentiments of Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Abu Bakar, the Sultan of Johor at that time. This Anglophile influence can further be seen in the British architectural influences not only on the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque but also in several others government and palace buildings in Johorconstructed during the same period.

The mosque sits on top of a prominent hill, overlooking the Straits of Johor and was named for Sultan Abu Bakar, the father of Sultan Ibrahim who ordered its construction. It can accommodate 2,000 worshippers at any one time.
