The purpose, intended audience and context all shape the way in which the text is constructed. This has shaped the plot, characters and setting in the novel creating a dystopia with a meaning behind it. With the context of the time period the novel is written in many events were occurring, this shaped the way the novel was written and the themes and ideas within the novel.

The contextual influences of Fahrenheit 451: The text was written, during a time of great technological advances. This is a contributing factor, to the dystopian genre of the text. People were scared of what this new technology could potentially bring. There was also the 'Red Scare' the fear of communism, which lead to the prosecution of many creative minds, which lead to a more generic model of society. People thought that, because of televisions etc, there would be a loss of creative thoughts.
The purpose of Fahrenheit 451, could be argued, to be to warn the reader of the possible threats from censorship. It is seen in the novel, through the censorship of books. During the time of the novel being written, there was a lot of censorship happening, particularly to do with communism.
The target audience is young adult-adult. The themes in this text, are to complicated and hard for children to understand, but they can cause the target audience, to think about the themes, or deeper meaning of the text

The red scare forced the people of america to accuse people, these were "coincidentally" people of the liberal arts and those who had creative minds, hence the marginalization of these people led to a more generic "pc" model of society which is displayed in f451 through the use of TV and fast entertainment and loss of creative thought and free will.

Hence f451 acts a a social commentary on society, as technology progresses the minority voices become louder and hence the people adopt a more generic, bland version of society void of any creative process.
