  • Start assessment with easiest/simplest questions
  • Use simplified language for instructions, multiple choice options
  • Include word banks
  • Ask students to circle and/or underline key text. Give examples of doing so
  • Provide opportunities for the student to explain his/her reasoning
  • Ask students to draw pictures to show understanding
  • Use a variety of question formats (e.g., multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer)
  • Underline/bold key vocabulary in the instructions for students
  • Prompt students to write a postcard/email (rather than an essay)
  • Include two-part questions (e.g., yes/no, then explain why)
  • Relate questions to students’ experience, background knowledge
  • Give example answers
  • Consider cultural bias within the assessment and eliminate it
  • Consider project based learning and options that allow students to demonstrate comprehension in alternative ways

Always remember to take the language proficiency levels of your emergent bilinguals into consideration. Allow them to express their understanding of the content.
