After researching Women and Poverty Globally, I found it most surprising that in this modern-day society many countries are still so far behind in their treatment of women as second-class citizens and social deprivation.

It’s estimated by the World Food Program (WFP) gender policy and strategy that 60% of chronically hungry people are women and girls. In developing countries women make up 43% of the agricultural labour force, yet women don’t have the same access as men to productive resources. In South Asia almost 70% of women employed are in agriculture and do more then 60% of women in sub-Saharan Africa.

Research indicates that when more income is put into the hands of women, child nutrition, health and education improves. In South and Central America, rural children are about 1.8 times more likely to be underweight than their urban counterparts. Other regions do not fare much better.

[1] Facts & Figures. (n.d.).

I don’t feel that one can truly relate to the magnitude of poverty women are going through around the global. By the luck of Geographic’s have was blessed to be born and raised in a Country that has democracy.

I was able to raise a child on my own and not really run into the issue of poverty, there might have been time’s I thought I was living in poverty however, that really wasn’t the case. I was able to put nourishing food on the table, clothes on my childs backs and a roof over their heads. All because of the luck of the draw to geographic location I was born.

I found this one of the most empowering foundations. They are using their resources to try to resolve world issues. Melinda Gates is passionate about women’s issue in general. Mrs. Gates is passionate about the abuse women receive around the globe and how women are not appreciated for the daily work they do.

The Gates foundation tackles issue globally rather then by region, they work with partners that can help to affect change globally and them scale to a local level. The Global Division aims to identify and fund the delivery of high-impact solutions that can reduce health inequities and give everyone the opportunity to health and a productive life. Innovative approaches and expanding existing ones so they reach the people who are in the most need. [1]

[1] What we do (n.d).

I learned first and foremost that change takes time. “Women’s lack of economic power is also related to their strong presence among the ranks of the poor," [1] gender biases in property and inheritance laws and education also leave women at greater risk for poverty, particularly when marriages end, or a husband dies (UNICEF, 2006; UNIFEM, 2009a).

“Poverty is said to have a “woman’s face” because the majority of the 1 billion people living on one dollar a day or less are women (UNIFEM, 2009a). For example, in the country of South Africa, two-thirds of female-headed households are poor, compared to one-third of male-headed households and in Malawi, there are three poor women for every poor man (UNIFEM, 2009a). The gap between women and men caught in the cycle of poverty has widened in the past decade, a phenomenon commonly referred to as the feminization of poverty.” [2]

[1] Burn, S.
