The receiver's house chapter 10

The receiver's house is different from other houses in the community, because unlike the rest of the community, the receiver possess of hundreds or more books stacked up in his room, whereas the rest of community have access to so little books. Adding on, the receiver also has access to his own privacy, for example, he gets a lock on his door, and a switch to turn of the speakers place in the house to watch the community. No other citizen has the privilege. The reason why these differences exist, is because the receiver is the most important job in the community, making it principle, to provide more than a normal citizen would receive.

The actual process for transmitting memories is where the person that is going to receive the memory must lie face down without a tunic, bare chested, as the person who is going to transmit the memory, places their hand on the top of their bare back. The first memory that Jonas received was the memory of snow.

The statement that Jonas says means, Jonas did not know of any place else, but his community. He understood their were other communities, but this life was all he knew, he wasn't aware of their history. This is no way to live, because although their community may be at peace now, they would never understand what freedom was like, and why they forbid it. If all citizens lived like this without no memory of before, some may come to a question of why they must, or mustn't do something.

Jonas is surprised when The giver turns the speaker off, and locks the door, because the rest of community were never given this privilege to do such things, and lived this way everyday, while The giver lived differently with the freedom of privacy. I can infer that the privacy of normal citizens in the world is not common at all. I can infer that the way Joans lives with, is no privacy at all, and when he discovered the receiver got their privacy, it fascinated him.
