Should wolves be protected?

I believe that the wolves should not be in the Yellowstone Park. I think this because they eat all of the animals that live there and the put the people that work there and that go on tours there in danger. I do believe that they should be protected by the endangered species act. I believe this because they should still be protected because they are animals and they deserve to be protected.

Ecosystems

Carrying capacity, predator/prey population, and competition can heavily affect an ecosystem. Carrying capacity can affect an ecosystem because if a ecosystem is overpopulated then the food is more limited than it would be if there were a balanced population. That is why there is a carrying capacity for ecosystems so that the food won't be limited. One example of carrying capacity that we have done in class is the bear necessities game. This is a good example because in the game there were to many bears (students) playing so not a lot of people got the resources they needed to survive. Predator/prey population affects the ecosystems because if there is more predators in a ecosystem then the prey would die off because the predators would eat all of the prey. Then the predators wouldn't have food because they ate all the prey so they would die off too and it would affect the whole ecosystem. One example is the moose and tick video. This is a good example because the ticks were overpopulated and they killed a lot of the moose. Competition is also a big affect on ecosystem because when animals compete for resources, then the resources will be limited and that could lead to extinction. One example is the bear necessities game. This is a good example because in the game all of the bears (students) were competing for food and water and very many bears got the resources they needed to survive so only a few bears survived.

Wolves in Yellowstone live in packs of about 10 wolves. They are very social animals and they defend their territory by howling and marking it with their urine. Their diet consists of 90% of elk in the winter and 10–15% of deer in the summer. They also kill bison. From 1995 to 1997, 41 wild wolves from Canada and northwest Montana were released in Yellowstone National Park. According to the graph, Yellowstone National Park went from it's highest population of wolves which was 280 in 2003 to 100 in 2015 . In Wyoming, it went from it's lowest of 10 in 1955 to it's highest of 390 in 2015. In greater Yellowstone ecosystem it went from it's lowest of 10 in 1955 to it's highest of 520 in 2015.

Population

Over the years, the population of wolves, elk, moose, and willows have gone up and down. According to data, the wolves population has gone up in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Wyoming has gone up because of the newly formed packs that have spread out and established new territories, but in the Yellowstone National Park has gone down because of a disease called Sarcoptic mange. According to the data for the elk, the population in Yellowstone has gone down from 19000 in the 90's to 5000 in 2016 because of their predators, the over populated wolves. According to the data for the willows, it has gone up because of the elk population decreasing. The reason why the elk population decreasing helps the willows is because back when the elk population was high, the elk did a lot of browsing to the willows so the willow population went down, but now that the elk population is low then the elk don't browse the willow very often so that allowed the willows to grow back. According to data for the moose, the population has gone down from 1,000 in the 1970's and 200 in 1996 (most recent data) because of the fires of 1988 that burned mature fir forests. Many old moose died during the winter of 1988–89, probably as a combined result of the loss of good moose forage and a harsh winter.

Balance of Nature Hypothesis

I think the balance of nature is a good thing because if there were not a lot of predators then the prey would over populate and if there were too much predators then the prey would go extincted. I think that deer would be worse off with without wolves because if there were no wolves to eat the deer then the deer would overpopulate and then there would be competition for food and water.

Physical and Biological Disruptions Effecting Ecosystems

Physical and biological disruptions can affect ecosystems. For intense, wolf populations affect the elk and willow populations. The reason of this is because when the wolves population is high then the elk population is low and vise versa. When the elk population is high then the willow population is low and vise versa. This happens because when wolf population is high then there is more wolves to eat the elk. When the elk population is high then there is more elk to eat the willows.
