Looking back: The importance of family to you was something that stood out to me from the looking back exercise and continued throughout the class. I loved hearing your love of adventure and how that has manifested in you taking on risks and moving away from home. Your stories showed that you are someone who is able to balance staying grounded in family and where you’re from with being open to new experiences and growth. I think that ability will serve you very well as a leader.

As someone who is still discovering the impacts of a sudden and close loss, my heart felt for high school Sydney whose world was set off its axis by grief. 

I see a connection between your success in creating stability for yourself and ability to create that for others in the future.

I see you as a leader who enables and uplifts others by creating a space for people to safely test their limits and explore passions. 

Looking back: I appreciated your openness and vulnerability – Some of my grandparents passed away while I was young, and I never got a chance to see my paternal grandpa, so I could imagine how hard it was for you from 2010-2014. Yet I believe the hardship you’ve been through shaped who you are. Your long-distance relationship with bf also resonated with me.

It was really interesting to hear how you noticed the dynamic in your family shift with the passing of your great-grandmother.  I enjoyed seeing how her impact on you is carried through in your desire to prioritize family and friends in your future.  

I really like your emphasis on finding balance across your life, even as you grow into different leadership positions.  Based on what I’ve noticed, I fully expect that you can be even more effective as a leader by emphasizing this for the groups you go on to lead as well.

Looking Back Thoughts: I felt like I was able to relate to so many elements of your story, and I really appreciated how clear and open you were when you shared it. It was clear to me that you are very close to your family, and deeply value those connections. At the same time, you also mentioned wanting to explore and try things outside of your comfort zone. Those two elements resonate deeply with my own experiences, so it was nice to hear from someone else who felt similarly! I also enjoyed your vision exercise – learning about your goals for balance and stability, as well as your passions for healthcare! Hope to cross paths in our next two quarters at Kellogg and again as colleagues!
