During the Black Death around 1348-50, the Jews were wrongly accused of the cause of the deathly plagues that killed a third of Europe's population. Religiously, they became scapegoats. It all started with rumours, such as poisoning wells, and false confessions of Jews. Most Jews then were merchants and the infected rats were carried by merchants. They confessed in taking part of the disease, even though they had nothing to do with it, as they were being tortured in hopes for it to stop, however, they were killed in the end. Although the Black Death had not reached to most Jewish populated towns, they were banned or killed. The Jewish community were being burnt on wooden platforms in their local cemetery, they say that thousands were spared to be baptised. On the other hand, some Jews would rather burn themselves rather than converting to Catholicism. Jews in Avignon were spared under the protection of the Pope, unlike in other parts of Europe. It has become unclear whether the Jewish Community mainly died of the plague or the massacres.

They began to lose their faith in Christ because despite countless hours of prayer, God never provided answers for them or help them find a cure. He had abandoned them in their eyes.. Europe at the time was the most Catholic country in the world. The priests and Bishops of Europe could not provide any answers or a cure, they lost a lot of its influence on the people and for many people, their view of the world changed dramatically.

Before the Black Death around 1348-50, almost everything in daily life were under the influence of the Church and the Pope. Many people looked up to the Pope for guidance rather than the King.
The Church struggled to cope with the plague. It damaged their reputation as new priests were often becoming less educated and more inexperienced. As a consequence of not knowing of the cure and the disease, many concluded to losing their faith and believing in supernatural powers.
The many deaths of Catholics around Europe contributed to the decline in the confidence and faith towards the institution of the Church and it's leadership. The church were also becoming wealthier leaving everyone else to suffer.

People back then were losing their faith and turning against each other, such as killing the local Jewish community. Flagellation came about which helped spread the disease. People also began to turn against the church as they questioned their religion, because they did nothing to help. It also lead to less priests being in the church which then began to welcome uneducated and inexperienced priests.
