Subduction can also occur at these boundaries where one plate slides beneath the other. When an oceanic plate collides with a continental plate, the dense oceanic plate will be pushed below the less dense continental plate (subduction). When a continental plate collides with another continental plate, they push up against each other forming mountains. When two oceanic plates collide, one will sink beneath the other. Rifts are created when these plates diverge. Magma starts to rise and it cools forming new lithosphere. Seafloor spreading is a form of divergent boundaries. As said earlier, the magma rises and forms new seafloor pushing the older seafloor away. Rifts appear when continental plates diverge.
