She liked to listen to Mexican pop(Flans, Pandora, Tatiana). She did not really follow fashion, she mainly wore comfortable clothes like jeans. Most teenagers(females) would wear Flans-inspired fashion. Most teenagers would wear tight skirts that reached the calves. They would also wear crop tops(not very socially acceptable) and oversized shirts that were cinched at the waist. They often used bright colors and had messy hair. Males wore a lot of clothes that are used today(t shirts, shorts, pants) and had semi-neat hair.

Middle School Years

Tortas, tacos, and traditional Mexican foods were popular in the 80's in Guadalajara. Claudia liked Paletas Deluxe which were spicy lolly pops. She also enjoyed chocolate. For recreation, she enjoyed playing volleyball with her neighbors. She started middle school at 7 am, there was a total of 6 periods, and she carried books and notebooks for each class. She had to walk 4 kilometers to reach her middle school. In order to graduate from middle school, each student had to have a technical career class(which prepared students to work). You had your typical classes like math, history, Spanish, English, science, art, etc. A lot of people were unable to pay for high school(all schools had to be paid for). Not everyone was able to attend school due to financial issues. You also had to pay for books, uniforms, and lunches, along with other typical supplies. There was plenty of homework from all classes including lots of writing and reading. She would spend 2-4 hours completing homework. The 3 main school buildings had 2 floors. Most teachers were strict. Teachers were allowed to publicly humiliate anyone as a form of discipline. You were required to wear uniforms. Each class had 40-50 students. The classrooms were similar to modern-day ones just with less technology. For example, instead of a whiteboard, there were chalkboards. The highest technology available was a typewriter(not the electrical one) even though computers had existed in Mexico for some time. Schools with new technologies were extremely expensive for common people.

Her first job, which lasted a weekend due to personal choice, was as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant in downtown LA, on Broadway St. Her second job was selling jewelry in a shop close to the Chinese restaurant. She used the money to pay for her violin lesson. Her third job was as a secretary for a church denomination(which made her move frequently) that lasted many years. Her fourth job was as a construction worker. She says that this was the most physically demanding job she has ever had. Her fifth job was to pick up orders in a flip-flop warehouse. With the money from this job, she paid for her university education. Then she sorted bingo cards in another warehouse. She then worked in another warehouse sorting brochures. Then she had to work for free as a therapist intern in order to get her LMFT license. Then she worked as a therapist at Fallbrook Union Elementary School District. Next, she worked at Riverside County(near UCR) as a therapist for 8-9 years. She says she is unhappy with the system. Now, she runs her private practice which started in 2018.

After 5 different junior colleges, she attended Biola University(her favorite) where she got her Bachelor's Degree of Science in Organizational Leadership. Then she attended Hope International University, where she got her Master's Degree in art in Marriage and Family Therapy. She said that the thing she would like to change about her young adult years was not to drop out of college to work in the church denomination.

The primary reason why she immigrated to the US was that her mom’s business was not making enough money to support the medical school of her oldest sister. She was the last one to immigrate to the US with her sister(3rd one born). She says she is grateful to have had the chance to immigrate to the US because she would not have had the same educational opportunities or quality of life education gave her. She came to the US in August 1987. Her home before she immigrated was on the outskirts of Guadalajara. She left everything behind her family, friends, culture, belonging, house, etc. Most of her memories made her homesick. Acculturation was very difficult for her due to discrimination and the feeling of not being welcome. She first settled in East LA. She did not know any English, the only language she knew was Spanish. During the long bus trip, she was worried, after all, she had to leave everything she knew behind.

Her first impression of the US was that the buildings were nice, not the people. Many Hispanics/Latinos(including her) were afraid to speak Spanish due to the fact that they would be discriminated against, disrespected, and called names like “wet backs.” Even some American Hispanics(Chicanos) descendants would also discriminate against others. She had no real expectations other than learn English and return to Mexico. She was not shocked to see so much discrimination as she had already experienced it in Mexico due to the color of her skin and social status. She noticed that women had more rights than they did in her neighborhood back home. Education opportunities were greater in the US than in Mexico. She also noticed that students were disrespectful toward their teachers and other adults.

She liked El Chavo del Ocho because she found it entertaining and she could relate to it. She liked the Little House on the Prairie because she found similarities between the show and her life such as the kindness between neighbors and she felt it heartwarming. She liked Whiz Kids because she wanted to use a computer and do amazing things with it, basically, she wanted to unlock all the things computers could do. She also found the show entertaining, and full of excitement.
