Sound in Lovefield:

Lovefield is a short film that entices the audience because it leads them to believe one thing and at the end reveals something completely unexpected. Throughout the film audio is used to trick the audience to get a reaction.

The audience are initially drawn towards the idea that the film will have a negative end because of some of the aspects introduced such as, the lighting and calm introduction of the cornfield has connotations of isolation and loneliness. A swinging, creaky sign is also shown with a crow perching on the top, this has connotations of darkness and the crow brings an aspect of death.

Firstly, an example of the audio being a reflection of the character and their actions could be where the farmer is shown running from the field and fumbling with his keys at the car. The audio during this is very quick paced and dramatic, it builds suspense and excitement to what is happening within the audience. The volume of this audio is also very loud, this adds to the building tension. Another example of audio within a shot that reflects the audience’s reactions would be where there is a close up of the woman’s foot twitching and as it stops there is a pause in sound followed by a sudden slicing sound where the farmer aggressively stabs a large bloody knife into the ground. The sound replicates the gasps the audience would ideally make in the eyes of the director.

Towards the end of Lovefield there is short dialogue between the two characters, the audio for this doesn’t however make a big impact on the audience because their lips can easily be read and the emotion is more on their faces. Throughout Lovefield sub verse audio is used, this builds upon expectations of the audience and where the scene is going to become dramatic build to nothing. An example of this would be when the farmer takes the blanket out of his car and along with the visuals the audience is lead to believe that he is hiding a body due to the tense music, however it is then shown that the woman had given birth, this is when the audio changes to a softer, more upbeat melody, making the audio sub verse.

The purpose of the sounds in Lovefield range from informing the audience to entertaining them. An example of audio that informs would be the phone ringing, we know that this is informative because it doesn’t make the audience feel any specific emotion it just tells them that the phone is ringing. The audience would be the ambient dramatic music used at the start of the film, this entertains the audience because it sets the scene and allows the audience to create a feeling around the scene.

How sound is used in media:

Sound is used in media in many different ways. Through TV to radio, sound can be used in advertising, sharing opinions and providing entertainment to an audience.

In radio, sound is the overall main product to provide a show. Sound can be included in dialogue from presenters introducing music and talking thought out the show. Sound is also used in radio through the use of music and advertising . In radio, music is the main source of sound to create an interesting show for the audience at home to listen too. I also think using sound in advertising is also good as it can make an advert memorable with a catchy tune or rhyming within the lyrics of the advert. This will stick in listeners minds so they will remember to purchase this product being sold.

In TV, music can be used in many different types of ways. Whether that be a backing track (diegetic or non--diegetic) or to emphasis the noise of an action the actor, presenter or person on TV is doing. Music makes TV interesting as if TV was silent, there wouldn't be a lot of verbal communication, music can make the storytelling more interesting and entertaining for an audience.

Music used in media is made using instruments. The instruments are played by individuals or an orchestra. Music helps film and TV to create drama and suspense. This is all atmospherical.

Mainly, dialogue in sound elements is sued for story telling or painting a picture whether that be TV or radio. Dialogue can help a story move along or progress from the beginning to middle and then to end.

Ambient sound are often recorded on busy streets or in public places with a boom mic. Boom microphone's pick up all sounds in a scene from every angle, making the sound more realistic compared to if it was made digitally by composing multiple sounds, layered onto each other.

Foley artists use objects like rocks and fabrics to create certain sounds that can be used as sound effects for post production in film and TV.
Some of the more common sounds like bones breaking and rain are actually made by using vegetables like celery and snapping them and by pouring gravel to make the sound of heavy rainfall.
The people who make these sounds are known as foley artists, because of the first foley artist, Jack Foley.

Below is an example of some research I did about Foley. I came across this video from Toy Story which showed me step by step how foley was used.
