On the left page is the main image of big hip hop star 'Bruno Mars'. He has his foot against a music speaker, and his arms in the air. The position he is in suggests he is trying to fly, or float. This connects with the main article title 'When Mars Attacks'. The model has quite cool clothing on, such as a brown suit, black shoes, black sunglasses and a hat. Men may look at this and wish to be him, and women may want to be with him. The background darkens from a white to deep blue. The lighter colour surrounds 'Bruno Mars', which could connote that he is 'God like' and is fighting off dark demons. Especially with the white around him, as white symbolises purity and innocence.

This article seems to be very balanced between image and text, this is done so the readers can observe the picture but also take in the information on the right page without it being too cluttered. For my own magazine, I am going to try and balance my article between text and images.

Three columns have been used to layout the text, because then the text is visible and it really makes the page look professional instead of it being one large paragraph. 

The headline and strapline are unlike other double page spreads I have seen. Most are across the top of one page, or go over both pages, but this one has fallen in line with the three column layout. Personally, I think this looks very professional and 'new' looking. I hadn't really thought of setting my article out in this way, however these pages look really effective, and I will consider this layout on my own magazine. The headline is 'When Mars Attacks', and many people may wonder what this has to do with a artist, which then makes them read on. However, I know after reading the article, that he is releasing new music, and the headline means his new music will take over the World, hence 'Attacks'. For my rap magazine, I will try and come up with something creative and catchy for my headlines. The strapline is a little introduction to the article and who it is about. 'Vibe' have added rhetorical questions to interest the reader, then given the answer. I think I will use this convention on my own article. They have also stated how many awards Bruno has, which is a good introduction to someone that may not know him as well as others, therefore proves that he is internationally popular. Many rap fans want to be in with the new popular , hence why the magazine tries and promotes 'Bruno Mars' as the next big thing. The 'Mars' on the headline is in black which makes it stand out, and tells the reader who the article is about. The 'When' and 'Attack' is in a dark teal colour, matching the background on the other page. The font used reminds me of the book 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus', by John Gray. The font therefore reminds me of something from out of space, hence its squareness and certain curved edges- its irregular.

The language used is to aim to their target audience, for example, 'breezed', and starting questions with 'You...'. By doing this, makes the article informal, and an easy read for viewers. Lots of sentences and questions include short sentences, this is to cut up the interview and make it a different reading experience, rather than just long- winded answers and boring questions. For example, 'Vibe' asked 'Bruno Mars' why he liked 'Elvis Presley' so much and Mars compared him to other singers like 'Michael Jackson' and 'Little Richard'. 'Vibe' then states 'Showmen' and Bruno replies with 'Showmen. The show was first. No tricks. You know- no smoke, no mirrors.' I will try and use language like this in my own article as I think it adds to the conversational vibe, and it being less formal targets the audience correctly. 'Vibe's' questions are in a bold, black font, however, Bruno's answers are in a small black font, this makes it really distinctive as to who is answering and who is asking the questions. I will use this technique on my own double page spread.

On this double page spread (dps), there is only one column used, on the far right of the page. This is because the image is so effective, they wanted to include as much of it as possible. I haven't seen this on any other dps's, however I think this is incredibly forceful for getting the point across that 'Nas' is big business, and deserves three quarters of the page for his own portrait. The headline, 'NAS' is located at the top of the right box, above all of the writing. This is unusual, as most headlines are placed over the main image, or situated in the top left corner. Although, I think this is compelling, and makes this article stand out from the others. The headline seems to be a old, English, Shakespearean type of font. This connotes that this musician has been around a long time (thus, 'Illmatic', his first album, came out in 1994) A quote from the rapper is also in this type of font, again suggesting the maturity of his lyrics. When creating my music magazine, I will remember to correctly connect the font I choose to the artists I feature, as in this article it looks powerful. For example, in my inspirational texts post, I stated 'Drake' would have a moderner font compared to a rap legend like 'Biggie Smalls'. The headline is a grey-ish colour, which will of been picked from the opposite picture using the eyedropper tool. I am going to do this for my dps.

The main text is small using a regular font. This is so it's easy for the magazine buyers to read. The vocabulary used in this article is very particular to the audience that will be reading it. For example, in the lyrics at the top of the page, on the right include the word 'F***ing', which would not be appropriate for younger readers to see. Consequently, this automatically suggests who would be reading this article/ magazine. The text also includes language like 'Nas fans want Nas', 'Check the tooth chipped smile', and 'No gold fronts anymore'. The use of this sort of text, again suggests who would be reading it, and that it wouldn't fit any celebrity, except for rappers. Some sentences are short, with full stops after a few words, connoting that the fans and readers want their information quickly. The language is very colloquial and slang, this consociates with the readers, as they all think they are in a special gang with a secret language between them. In my own article, I will try and make my readers feel like their in a special crew and up to date with new information.

This dps is balanced between text led and image led, as the whole of the left page is an image of the celebrity, and the right is all text. The image is in black and white of the celebrity, straightaway this is impressive as you notice her on the page. 'Lady GAGA' doesn't have any clothes on, except a plastic chain- like necklace covering her chest area. Since she is so naked, this may conceal the fact she also reveals a lot in her article about new music etc. Her hair looks messy and unkept, which is ironic because a makeup artist, and hairdresser will of fully prepared her for this shoot. Again, the lack of clothes and unkept hair may promote the way she wants the World to see her- that she isn't perfect, and everyone is the same, no matter how much money is spent pruning her and making her look glamourous. In consideration of the image being black and white, connotes her dark and boring soul deep down.

There are three columns used to present the text in, which makes the page looks organised. I will consider this when designing my own article. The headline 'Lady GAGA' is very simple, and straightaway the audience knows who the page is on. It's plain and the colour black. Not much colour has been used on this page, except from the big 'L' in the middle of the right page, behind the article text. I think it is red to connote the singers passion for what she does, however it is also synergy with the whole magazine, as their main house colours are black, white and red.

Because the writing is so small, I can't really make out much of the text, although I did see the word 'go- go dancing', which is a lucrative buisness. It could propose that this article gets really down and dirty as to what this celebrity has done in her prior life of becoming a superstar. I don't think I will go into much detail of the celebrities life on my own magazine, as I want it to be mainly interview led.
