How important is it to be able to differentiate between fact and opinion! So often even adults struggle to sift through what are the facts. I chose this topic because of its importance and there are so many ways to illustrate this in the classroom.

To really understand Fact or Opinion, have students role play being a news reporter. Have one student create 10 sentences about a scenario where a lightning bolt strikes a tree and catches it on fire. 5 sentences are fact and 5 should be opinion. The classroom has fact or opinion signs that they will hold up when they hear comments that the reporter makes. Fun!

Put students into groups of two and have them design their own fun puppet using paper lunch bags. Then, have each group think of a scenario of something that has happened in the news. This might be a good time to brainstorm a little as a class. One student in the group will be "Mr. Facts" and the other will be "Mr. Opinion". Groups will then present a synopsis of the scenario (news event) where Mr. Facts presents only the facts, and Mr. Opinion interrupts with his opinions.

Creative Drama Lesson 3: Red light, Green Light

This is a game I created similar to red light, green light, but it will teach fact and opinion. Fact will be Green light and Opinion will be red light. The students will write down 10 sentences that will be labeled either facts or opinions. The teacher will then collect the papers and ask the student to line up against the wall in a clear open space. When the teacher reads one of the facts, the student will walk forward like green light. When the teacher reads an opinion, the students will freeze like red light. The first one crossing the finish line wins. You have to be careful and think before you go to make sure it's a fact!
