I find myself sometimes listening to a song and realizing that I do not like it because "it is so repetitive". And I do not think I am the only one that feels this way, repetition can often have a negative connotation. However from reading Ratliff's analysis on repetition in music I realize that repetition is an essential part of music and life in general. Repetition does not have to be a bad thing, in fact looking in daily life repetition can keep people sane. However, in a way if something is repeating and there is no variation, yes it can be annoying. However, reading Ratliff's interpretation, I would have to agree with how he sees repetition and how it can often be associated with length. But when looking at great works and songs that are still celebrated today, it is easy to see that there is often a repeated melody or chorus; that is just how the natural composition of a song is. Repetition is in a way inevitable in music. Not just within the song but like Ratliff says in the style of music. People create the same kind of music because it either sounds the same or because it tells of the same topic. Either way repetition is a crucial part of music and shouldn't be seen as a negative thing. Looking at one of the songs in Ratliff's playlist, that being the Isley Brother's, "Shout". Anyone who has heard this song can clearly point out the repetition. The clear repetition is the fact that he says "shout" quite a bit of times, but there is also the repeating tambourine line, as well as the repeated "wooo" after every "you know you make me wanna shout" towards the end of the piece. Though there is A LOT of repetition, in no way is it annoying. It is what makes this song so memorable, as well in my opinion just a fun song to dance to and have fun with. Looking at a song called "Gum, Toe and Sole" by Gus Dapperton, I recently have been listening to this song a lot and realize that it does hold these repetitive qualities. At the beginning of this song there is a vocable line that is repeated a few times but each time there is an added element, such as drums, and then the bass but essentially it is the same melody being repeated. Throughout the song there is a continuous drum pattern that is repeated throughout, but overall the song is really enjoyable and the initial vocable line is repeated a few more times, yet it keeps the song interesting. I included this video because in the hit television series called "The Office", one of the characters constantly makes "that's what she said" jokes. It seems childish which it is but it adds a lot to the show and his character development. Another idea related to repetition with this show is the fact that at the beginning of every episode the theme song is played. This is repeated throughout every episode in all the seasons. The idea of this could seem annoying however it is a prominent and distinctive feature the show offers. This is a band I am very fond of and I decided to include a picture of them because many of their songs are quote long and have repeated melodies, but these are very complex songs. Ratliff talked about repetition to enhance to length which is something that I see in this band. I though I would mention them because I really love their music and also feel that it is relevant to the idea of repetition. For reference one song is 2112. It is an absolute masterpiece that exhibits lots of repetition.
