This reminds me a lot of male circumcision. It isn't necessary, but it is done anyways for arguable health benefits. In this scenario, the health benefit would be not only for the cattle but the owners as well. Someone in class mentioned that by not dehorning them, a number of problems arise: getting stuck, injuring other cattle, injuring people, etc. I personally do not believe in doing things that are going to cause unnecessary pain to the cattle, but I also understand that it can be beneficial in the long run. So, essentially I do not agree or disagree, I feel very neutral about this. I wish more information were provided about dehorning, I feel the decision would become much clearer then.

This is a difficult topic for me because I'm extremely biased towards slaughtering animals in general. I do not believe in it. But, for this scenario, I do not believe it's right to include religion into the slaughter of another animal. It seems unfeasible to me, to kill an animal based on one's religion. I UNDERSTAND it, since religion is a very important part of a lot of peoples lives...but in the end, the real question should be, "How can we slaughter this animal and inflict as little pain and suffering as possible?" Rather, "How should we slaughter this animal based on our religion?"

Confinement should not be okay, PERIOD. Let animals be animals while they can. Again, my response is going to be biased but I don't understand why it's okay to confine any animal that is being raised for use. Happy animals produce better quality products, that has been scientifically proven. I.e. Kobe beef/Wagyu cattle. I understand the aspect of how it is safer for piglets, but "naturally" speaking...if they were given acres of land, I'm pretty sure it would be much safer as the piglets can thrive with all of the land provided.

Humans are so focused on making production systems efficient that they value efficiency more than the welfare of the animals. The continuous confinement of sows should be prohibited because they are experiencing distress, discomfort and are ultimately prevented from expressing natural behavior. Despite this, I believe that farrowing crates are necessary for the sake of the piglets. Lastly, I do believe that rooting material should be accessible for the mental enrichment of the sows. A sow that is coping well with its environment is more likely to have a higher quality and rate of production.

I believe solving the problems associated with dehorning is worth the 4-5% increase of milk prices. 4-5% is a small amount, and it's likely that most people won't mind spending a couple more cents to buy milk. But I don't think it would be worth it if the price becomes 50% more. I don't think enough people care about if their beef is from a cow that was or was not humanely treated. Once they see a 50% increase in their meat products, they will most likely switch to a cheaper brand.

I am torn on this issue. I see the need to protect the piglets (for the piglets sake and the farmer profit). From my personal experience in breeding swine, we tried the farrowing crate for our first gilt and after see the pain and discomfort she was in, we ditched the crate within a day and kept her in a small enclosed barn to raise her piglets. On that thought, piglets are at a real risk of being crushed during the first 24-48 hours. After this time period, the piglets are smart enough and capable to run out from under their mother before she lays down. With this logic, a possible solution is keeping the mothers in the crates for only 3 days max and then letting them move out with their litters. Within this 3 day period, the mothers would still need some time to get out and walk around outside of the crate.

There are a lot of pros and cons with this issue. While many of the pro's like working with safer cattle, reduced risk of injury, and an increase in the amount of cattle for the given space can easily be seen; I think there are some cons which may not fully present themselves at the time, if dehorning was a requirement. The increase in the price for meat I think would cause a domino effect on the welfare of some of the individuals in our society.

I think that continuous confinement shouldn't be allowed. In the statement it says that pigs may "spend as much as half their time rooting". If these sows are completely confined, that is unfair to them. I understand and agree that farrowing crates are very beneficial so that the mother does not squash her piglets, but i do think that she should have some time out of the crate where she can move around and have access to straw and other rooting material. Not to mention that some, keep these sows in Gestation and Farrowing crates. Other things that need to be considered is the length of time they spend in each type of crate? How many pregnancies is she going to have per year? What health concerns is this crate, creating for the sow?

Immediate euthanization of animals such as the sow should not be required by law. The veterinarian who is either going to be on the case or is already familiar with the case should analyze the situation before proceeding with euthanization. Depending on the condition and current welfare of the animal, euthanization may be deemed the best option for the animal, but making it a law could create financial loss, as well as loss of a life for something that was an easy fix. Euthanization is a better alternative to shooting an animal, but killing without receiving a professional opinion from a veterinarian first is inhumane.

I think confining the sows should be prohibited because the pigs should have room to walk freely and at least stretch their legs. If they're in the small crates for a long period of time, it starts becoming unsanitary because the pigs pretty much have to pee and poop where they are laying. Farmers could find another way to reduce piglet mortality without caging the sows in. I just don't think its right for a pig to live long periods of her life caged in.

For the safety of the piglets I believe that the sow should be kept in a farrowing crate, but should be allowed time to get up and go outside and come back in when she pleases. it's the same with my dog, for the safety of my house my Shiloh Shepard is kenneled when I got to work and class, but when I come home he is let out into the yard. So, I believe the sow should have the same semi-freedom my Shepard has.

I think that if the act of stunning did not conflict with the religious values than stunning should become a law. Personally, I don't see how stunning would get in the way but I don't know much about the process of kosher. But if you are going to bless this animal so you can eat it, shouldn't you also be able to give it the least painful death in respect to this animal. Yes, we have religious freedom in this country but I also think that we owe something to animals if we are going to slaughter them. Like the least painful death we can offer them. In the end, I think that there should be a discussion with rabi and law markers to make sure that stunning is acceptable. If is does become a conflict, then I think they should be able to find a happy medium so that the meat can be kosher and the animal can be slaughtered in the least painful way.

I think that something worse could potentially happen if new genetics were introduced to a population of cattle who no not have the gene for no horns.
