Genetic Variation

Genetic variation offers the offspring a stronger immune system and disease resistance. However, some population may come from very poor environment; therefore, they may suffer from infertility due to infection and ovulation defects. 3D bioprinting ensures 3D printed ovaries which can be inserted in infertile animals, which can then result in healthy offspring.

An experiment has been done with an infertile rat, this rat gave birth to a healthy offspring due to 3D printed ovaries. The new ovaries were inserted into the infertile rat.
3D printing also helps researchers study evolution of animals that took place millions of years ago, and helps study the origin of life. For example, a couple of researchers from UMASS Amherst, a public research university, used 3D printed replicas of 200 year old mammal teeth. This was done to study the evolution of the earliest mammals. They wanted to prove "the ability for teeth to damage prey is the most significant factor in the shaping of teeth". The 3D bioprinter helped these researchers find how the predators teeth changed over time. 3D bioprinter is not only used in the world of medicine, but also in other fields too.

Marfan Syndrome

An experiment using 3D bioprinting has been done in 2008 on Marfan Syndrome. Marfan syndrome is a genetically inherited connective tissue disease caused by a mutation. This is a scenario about a 26 year old man. The 3D bioprinter was used to create an exact replica of this man's damaged aorta; which is the largest artery. A sleeve was also built for the aorta. In this situation, the mutation on the human body was harmful, but it has been solved with the use of the 3D bioprinter. This is one of the many life changing surgeries done, using the 3D bioprinter.

3D Bioprinting is used mostly for transplants, organs, bones, surgical therapy, tissue engineering, and reconstructive surgery. 3D bioprinting also makes a dissolvable hydrogel to protect cells, as its tissues fill up spaces within the cells.

This would be very beneficial for medical purposes. If someone needs a nose transplant, instead of waiting for transplants to come in from other countries, the hospital can manufacture the part domestically.

Prosthetics come at a lower price when they are printed. Prosthetics are changing lives because they’re coming with the latest technology that people in the past would not have.
Cellink, which is a 3D bioprinting company, launched its first bioprinter in early 2016. This swedish based company created the first standardized bioink. The bioink is made of nanocellulose alginate, which is extracted from seaweed. Cellink is trying to reduce the price of these machines, so they could be more affordable. This is one of the many companies that are trying popularize 3D bioprinting.

Adaptation Over Time, Using 3D Bioprinting

3D bioprinting will not affect the traits of a population in a negative way. As said before, the mice that had the 3D bioprinted ovary did reproduce normally. The evolution of that particular specie is not affected by a bioprinted organ. However, 3D printing does make studying evolution and the body of the earliest animals a lot more easier. Previously mentioned, we could see the change of a predators teeth 200 years ago to present day because of the bioprinter. The 3D bioprinter can show how different traits over time could change.

What is 3D Bioprinting?

The 3D bioprinter is a revolutionary machine that can bioprint organs. This machine seems unreal, but it will be one of the greatest gifts to humanity and to the field of medicine. The 3D bioprinter is a new machine, and at this point can print simple organs like muscles, tissues, and etc. Bioink is placed inside of this machine, and the ink itself is personalized according to one's DNA. In the U.S, over 900,000 people have died because of the lack of donors. With 3D bioprinters, we will not need donors; hence, providing printed organs to everyone. Many companies like Cellink have built this bioprinter. In about six years, scientists believe bioprinters can print the first complex organ, like the heart. This invention has and will save many lives, by replacing new organs with the previously damaged ones. The field of bioengineering is growing rapidly, and the bioprinter is one aspect and a stepping stone towards the field. The 3D bioprinter is and will impact humanity in a mind blowing way!
