"I have an excellent student who speaks French, is a great communicator and very creative, interested in climate justice and agriculture issues. She's going to be in West Africa, and wonders whether she might be able to do an internship with ActionAid Senegal.”

“Well she sounds great,” I thought. Hah! And how!

You landed in Tambacounda as a student and intern, but you were already a fully-formed comms, creative, climate and agriculture professional, who has wowed every team you worked with, with your skills and attitude. Within minutes you were getting on with powerful community storytelling, writing and designing a gorgeous agroecology toolkit for farmers (in French!), writing newsletters, and making films. A few years later you were again an intern, then a comms officer, then media manager with AAUSA, at the happy heart of the team. And I got to work with you on mobilisations, cool graphics, COPs, briefings, media, actions, films (AWARD-WINNING FILMS ACTUALLY!), and much much more. 

An intelligent analyser of situations, a proactive seeker of solutions, good at taking on feedback, with high standards, flexible, accommodating, adventurous, and a true holder of ActionAid’s politics and vision in your heart. Everything I said about you in those early days is just more true now.

Truly, my sister, you are a unique and amazing combination of love, humour, compassion, dedication and fun. You are the kind of person whose spark also helps others to unleash their own potential.

As I write this I’m wearing my favourite T-shirt, the one you designed. 

Jenna, you are rising to the challenge, and so must we.

I will always remember the kindness, care, and sense of justice you brought to the work and to share with your coworkers, even when you first started as an intern. Watching you grow in the job and take on more responsibilities and leadership roles has been amazing to watch. I know that whatever comes next for you will be amazing.
