I think a way for a team (in person with highlighters) to get faster at this 100 numbers game would be to have the next two players always looking ahead one or two moves and ready to highlight. So for example, if I were player 2, I would be looking for my 2, my 5, my 8, etc.

I think doing this assignment in a small group could be beneficial and also not so much.
Beneficial by getting the kids to work together, laughing and having a fun time trying to ‘beat the clock’ and other teams. I can also see it being not so great for kids who are shy or very independent; they may do the exercise in silence and once its done, never speak again to one another. I truly think it depends on the group dynamic for this ice breaker.

I think this activity could be really great as a beginning of the year ice breaker! It gets kids working together in a fun and engaging way. In my experience with my own students, they absolutely love any kind of timed challenge! However, as Kim noted, it could be a very intimidating task for more shy students. They may feel fear or dread rather than excitement over an activity like this. So it's important that as a teacher you recognize those students and adapt the activity to make sure they are comfortable.

I think this game is great because you can play it over and over to reinforce the group work expectations. In addition, the teacher can have students perform different goals to challenge the students and discover new patterns. For example, the goal could be to count backwards from 100, rather than starting at 1. Some other examples could be finding numbers by 5's (5, 10, 15, 20...) or finding only odd or even numbers.

I think this would be so fun to do in the classroom. It would help teach students about working together. They would learn about how important communication is. This would also be a great way to get students to work with other students they wouldn't normally work with.

I agree with Kim and Carly that this activity could make students feel uncomfortable or possibly like they are not smart enough. Some students get really competitive and they could make others feel bad for being slower then the rest.
