The contemplation of suicide in the media

A death by committing suicide, is one of the most controversial and heinous ways to perish due to religious and moral factors. In addition, killing oneself is absolutely a tragic death which will be promoted by the media due to its sensitive content that attracts the public. However, in the play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare the main character had and egregious view towards self-annihilation since he contemplated suicide as an option to end one’s sorrows by just executing a single action. On Act 3, Scene 1, a melancholic and effusive Hamlet said the following, “To be, or not to be… To die, to sleep no more and by a sleep to say we end the heartache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to”. Moreover, numerous modern day tragic heroes can be identified with Hamlet’s thoughts, one of them is the deceased rock artist Kurt Cobain. Both Hamlet and Cobain, saw suicide as a viable option to alleviate their pain. However the musician was frenetic and decided to take action by his own hand eventually finishing with his life while Hamlet didn’t end it all. At age 27, the rock performer decided to pull the trigger and end his griefs. Furthermore, his tragic flaws were severe depression and drug addiction which eventually caused his downfall. To conclude, both Hamlet and Cobain have a connection due to the fact that both saw committing suicide as an excellent method to stop one’s misery.
