         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war from the municipalities of Bagac and Mariveles on the Bataan Peninsula to Camp O'Donnell via San Fernando.</p><p><br></p><p>As many as 11,000 of the POWs died on the Death March as a result of the cruelty and inhumanity of their guards. </p><p><br></p><p>The siege of Bataan was the first major land battle for the Americans in World War II and one of the most-devastating military defeats in American history. It became a crucial turning point in World War II and the Pacific theater due to public outcry about treatment of the captured servicemembers – considered prisoners of war.</p><br>Bataan Death March]]></description>

It involved American and Japanese naval forces off the coast of the Philippines. The battle consisted of several engagements, including the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, the Battle off Samar, and the Battle of Cape Engaño. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>The Battle of Leyte Gulf was a decisive victory for the Allies. Although the Japanese inflicted heavy losses on the American escort carriers and their support ships during the Battle off Samar, the loss of Musashi and other heavy units weakened the Japanese navy considerably.</p><p><br/></p><p>The Battle of Leyte Gulf effectively ended Japan's ability to contest Allied control of the Pacific.
