By early October our calm corner had morphed into more of a reading nook where students would gather during silent reading. To differentiate the space to reclaim it as a calm corner (when the need became apparent) we added a table with sheer curtains draped over top so it created a “den” where a student could retreat but still see the learning materials (and we could see the student to ensure there were no safety concerns).

In short practicum I played classical music and the lull had to stay below while working independently. Worked really well. Students still got to chat but it didn’t get too loud. Will be bringing that into long practicum for sure.

Having an option for students to go out into the hallway and use the sandbox was a great sensory activity that students found useful to help themselves regulate.

Cultus Cave is a sensory room at my practicum school with dim adjustable lighting, fidgets, no toys and specific expectations for use.
