According to Joyce, the stories in Dubliners portray Dublin’s “childhood, adolescence, maturity, and public life.” They are precisely crafted sto- ries that depict the moral struggle of life in a commu- nity, with Dublin acting as a microcosm of society.

Joyce had looked forward to enormous sales, but the book sold only 379 copies the first year. The stories were given a positive review by writer Ezra Pound, however, and Pound’s friendship and support greatly boosted Joyce’s reputation.

1. "She was tired." This uses the simple words to describe the feeling and the mood of Eveline in that situation.

2.“Her father was becoming old lately, she noticed; he would miss her.”

This express Eveline's father's image slightly, showing him as aging and dependent.

Her gaze lingering on ordinary household items indicates Eveline’s fear of change. She’s rooted in the past and finds comfort even in routine burdens.
