Something Good
Summary: This book by Robert Munsch, describes the difference between wants and needs at the grocery store. Tyya goes grocery shopping with her dad and everything her dad buys she says its no good. He buys bread, milk, cheese and eggs, but Tyya wants ice cream, candy and cookies. She tried to convince her dad to buy something good and eventually he gets upset and tells her not to move. A saleslady passes by Tyya and thinks she is a doll. She put a price sticker on her nose. Multiple people try to buy Tyya but she yells and then ran away. By the end the the book her dad is forced to buy something good after all.

Classroom Usage: This is another great read aloud to introduce wants and needs and what is truly important to spend money on. As students listen, they can identify wants and needs from prior knowledge. I can have the students touch their head for every want and touch their nose for every need. I can also stop half way through the book and ask the students to make a text to self connection about when they go to the store with their parents.

Brain-pop Video- Needs and Wants
Summary: In this video, Moby and Annie introduce what needs and wants are. As well as the idea that not everyone has the same needs. They provide students with examples of possible wants and needs in their community. They also explore how someone can make money to afford to buy what they need and save money for what they want. The fact that someone must spend their money on things they need before things they want is emphasized. The video also identifies needs and wants that are goods and services. Moby and Annie introduce what goods and services are and who provides them for us.

Classroom Usage: My school district has an account with Brainpop and Brainpop Jr, so I use these online resources regularly in my classroom. There are other videos on different subjects that would be very useful for this unit. This particular video could be used to introduce needs and wants to students during a whole group lesson. Students can sit on the rug and watch the video, I can stop the video once or twice and check for understanding or have the students turn and talk to share their thinking or make a connection. After the video, there is an option to take a quiz, students can do this as a group and take turns going up to the smart board to select their answers. I will pick the first person to select the answer for us and then the student who selected the previous answer will call on a classmate to answer the next question.

I Want, I Need Song
Summary: This song is a catchy way to reinforce the difference between needs and wants. It acknowledges that sometimes wants can seem like needs because their friend has it. It also includes the importance of spending money carefully, saving money and making a plan to buy something they want.

Classroom Usage:
This song can be used during a whole group lesson as a discussion starter. After the students watch the video on the rug, I can ask them what is most important to spend money on, and what they should do if they really want something. This is a great resource to introduce a budget or plan when spending money to the students.
