  • Sport: An essential part of Barbados' culture is sport. A strong tradition is cricketing dating back to 1800's, when the game was played by British soldiers and by the plantation owners. Road tennis was invented in Barbados in the 1930's.

  • Music: tuk band is a collection of brightly attired musicians playing        drums and pennywhistles. Their music is a call to get up and dance. The songs of the tuk band are a blend of African music and British folk music. 
  • Personality: Bajans are known for their politeness and civility, which is an English influence.

  • words and sentences are generally spelled as they are pronounced.
  • Bajan words are commonly shortened versions of their original form.
  • th = d =    that – dat;     this – dis;     the – de
  • thing = ting
  • what happened? = whahappen?    (a sentence often flow into one long word)
  • the sun is very hot today! = de sun is hot, hot, hot!   (in Bajan you can say the word 'very' with the repetition of a word)
  • her ; she/ him ;  he    (pass her the drink = pass de drink to she)

    Barbadians speak with an accent best described as a combination of the influences of both the African and British languages.

    • Food: Bajan meals emphasize common foods in West Africa such as rice, fried fish and chicken. In special occasions, for example on Saturday's lunch, Bajans cook "Pudding and souse". The pudding is essentially pigs belly stuffed with spicy mashed sweet potato and boiled pig's head served with a "pickle" of onions, hot and sweet peppers, cucumbers and lime.
