This lesson plan is appropriate for middle school students and all beginning statistical units in any grade.

These difficulties Fabiola goes through only make her stronger and show her the way of her new life.

In preparation for the trip the young boy finds out his dad has just got another job and asks why they still have to go fishing. The father explains the trials that comes with immigrating to America. During this fishing trip they talk about many different things. One being that his father used to go wishing back when he lived in Vietnam. The story wraps up with them eating the fish they caught and reflect on the opportunity they have to live in America.

Bao Phi was a first time author when he wrote this book. The decision for this book was simple for him and he wanted his daughter to have more diverse children book options. Boo Phi represents the some of the struggles that immigrants go through. From them being judged by not speaking a perfect form of English to the difference of lifestyle they have to change. It offers accurate information in the way that children can understand it but still get the lesson that immigrants.

One struggles with the language and she talks about how back home she used to be able to communicate so freely. Then a boy who struggles with the new letters and feels like he cannot openly write like he used to. Lastly, a girl who does not understand the setup of the classroom and does not feel in place. Throughout the book it talks about these challenges the students have but then at the end they find ways to overcome. The girl who struggles speaking the language practices and makes new friends. The boy practices his writing and also makes a new friend who helps him and he teaches him some words from Korea. The last girl finds confidence to share with the class and then is encouraged to show more work. This story ends with all of these students feeling welcomed to their new school rather than in the beginning when they did not. 

The author of this book is Anne Sibley O’Brien is not a first time author and is one of the founders of the I’m Your Neighbor organization that promotes children’s literature that features immigration and any other new cultures to the U.S. This book does a good job showing the children how other children feel in this situation so they can apply it to them because they are the same age. Seeing the struggles will show the students how they can help make it easier by helping these students and including them.

This story would be helpful for children to learn about how hard it would be to have a family member sent away. The book addresses how Jose feels and also how other children feel to show that this is not an uncommon occurrence and that it is a struggle for many different children.

It gives a variety of questions that you can ask the students at the beginning, middle, and end of the book. These questions are able for the students to really analyze the struggles this family is going through. One of the question addresses the fact that the boy’s father struggles with English implying that English is not his first language, so the students have to analyze how that might make the boy feel. It then also has activities that the students can do after they read to further their education skills. These skills include the use of similes, writing a poem, and understanding the sequence of the story.
