When I look at advertising and environmental campaigns, I find the human role missing. In fact, it is the humans themselves who are responsible for the destruction. Whether it’s garbage or waste or pollution, I found that artists mostly use special materials to connect and express this theme. The funny thing is, to me, being full of junk images is visually powerful but lacks some empathy. So I started thinking about what it was that didn’t make me feel like it was really happening. Then I thought of the impact of the photos of people interacting with the exhibits rather than the images of the exhibits themselves, such as a large area of garbage and next to a small area of people, space devices to watch people and so on. These works of art or installations become complete when people are involved, perhaps because people are more likely to bring them into the picture. When viewing these pictures, they not only give visual and information expression, but also make the pictures more realistic and spacial. So I did a visual research on how to connect people and things from the angles of space, clothing, decoration and advertisement.

When I was first given this topic, it occurred to me that I could set a more specific area for my research. So I chose the Hogsmill river in Kingston as a specific study to find out what problems existed in the aquatic ecosystem of this river.
I investigated the river's surroundings, how people interact with it, the organisms present in the river ecosystem, the quality of the water and so on. In my research I learnt that the Hogsmill river is a heavily modified river and has suffered from a decline in biological quality and substandard chemicals in recent years, with sewage discharge, urban and traffic pollution, and physical modifications all contributing to this.
How have other artists reflected on the universal problem of aquatic ecosystems through their work? I have investigated a number of projects and I think they can be grouped into several categories: firstly, works that reflect reality by reorganising existing materials that are relevant to the problem. The Hong Kong Soup 1826 series, for example, reflects the fact that the river is heavily polluted with rubbish that people throw into the water by collating and photographing it, and that this rubbish, which is well known to the people of Hong Kong, is linked to the cultural history of Hong Kong in a way that resonates deeply with people. Secondly, the use of (issue-related) materials to produce works that reflect real-life issues. For example, the work Coral garden uses textiles to create the effect of coral bleaching, and the pollution of the sea by textiles is a major problem. The material and the form of expression connect the issues. Thirdly, through the expression and connotation of the work, the issue is communicated and called for, while the work itself engages with the issue, interacting with it and making it better. This is one of the most interesting works to me, Jason's underwater sculptures speak to the protection of the marine environment, while the sculptures themselves are used as artificial reefs, interacting with the underwater environment and becoming a major tool for improving the marine ecology.
All this investigation has made me realise that there are many different ways to present and solve problems. Inspired by this, I am imagining ways in which I might be able to interact with people and the environment, and I am also thinking about how to make it easier for everyone to get involved, rather than becoming a project with too high a barrier. In the first stage,I interviewed some people who is/was in a long distance relationship,and I choose some of them's story to show on the board.Then I found many environmental issues can be connected to this group,and the most obvious point is that they have to travel a lot in order to meet each other.So I get some data from my interviewees about the frequency they meet each other and the transport methods they use,I show a part of them on the board as well.After that,I do some research about those different transport methods,for instance,What energy do they use?How much energy they need to consumption?Then I found the key point is,after they consume those energy,they are all going to emit greenhouse gases.

As I learned more about the carbon emission of the different transportations, it seems the ground travel is more friendly to the environment then the flight,surprisingly,plane account for two percent of carbon emission in all human beings. Then I used a carbon calculator to count the one person's emission in various transport ways when they travel of 1000 kilometers(a normally domestic trip in China), the emission of flight is twofold of the train!

I wonder why we all want to reduce the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere?I started to learnd about the carbon cycle in our earth (bottom of the first board),and I figured out what can this rapid increase bring to us,it's not about saving the earth,is about saving ourselves.

Then I started to thinking about the connection between the relationship and the carbon emission,a spark just bursted into my mind, that the passionate in love is just like the carbon we made – the quicker and more times we met each other in a distance relationship,the more carbon we made,but in the end, we all want to end this distance and the emission.So I decided to use a symbol to represent the carbon dioxide as well as the feeling between couples.

However, what symbol is that? I viewed lots of artworks,then I found some may help,and I sticked them on the second board.Between those works, two of them attract me most,one is the texture that red watercolor made,the other one is a water trace in a concrete floor which reminds me of the texture that fire can make,so I did some trials.

My start point is my current life.
In the first stage, I looked at my kitchen, my apartment and the Kingston town centre. I found two problems, the first is that we produce a huge amount of household waste every day. Secondly, street rubbish is unavoidable and people always ignore them. 
The key to all of these problems is that people produce waste every day.
 
I began to dig deeper into my problem finding work. I looked at the waste ingredients that I produced in my apartment during the day. Most of them come from food packaging, delivery boxes. These packaging boxes are often used only once before they become garbage. I think it is a huge waste. So I went to check the relevant words. Then “Overpackaging waste became the” key to my problem.
Meanwhile, I also collected some artists' works about daily waste. They all show the potential relationship between waste and human beings. Swaantje Guntzel's piece depicts a couple with their heads wrapped in shopping bags standing in front of a rubbish dump. I can feel a sense of suffocation in this work. Plastic Ocean is the one that impresses me the most. The plastic is overwhelming.
In the following research, I will focus on the waste caused by excessive packaging. At the same time, I will reflect on and criticize the relationship between garbage and us.

Mapping:
I was intrigued by the topic of 'mapping geographical absences' and while I was life-sketching in a park, I thought it would be interesting to map out how parks accross the UK / London are dissappearing. While I couldn't find any projects/artwork that was exactly related to my topic, I decided to look at different maps that I found interesting. The one I liked most is the one on bottom right corner, which examines areas on joy and pain found across Minneapolis and St. Paul parks. I liked the concept of combining emotion, experience and mapping.

Corals:
There were tons of projects online about coral reefs. A majority of these projects took a 3d form and used interesting materials like yarn, paper, ceramics and (ironically) even plastic. What I really liked about the 3d forms is the sense of context and tangibility it brought to the coral forms. I also used the moodboard to understand what exactly I liked in these projects and thus what I wanted to convey and capture in my own project.

So I started a series of researches.

Firstly, I collected my waste for a day. I found that plastic waste is the most. Secondly, I undertook observation in my home, I discovered that the largest number of items are plastic products. Then, When I walked in Kingston Street, I found a lot of plastic garbage on the ground. 

Problem: I realized that Plastic is used everywhere, but it also ends up everywhere. Every household produces a lot of plastic waste every day, but very few plastic products are reused (very few households reuse plastic products).

I recorded the rubbish bins of my apartment and houses of the surrounding, but I found that the colors of the bins were different. In addition, what also confuses me is Waste Contamination. Since I wanted our plastic waste to be recycled as effectively as possible, not end up in landfills, how should we deal with our plastic waste, especially food packaging that has food residue or oil stain. If we clean our plastic packaged boxes before recycling them, then HOW CLEAN IS CLEAN?  Subsequently, I read recycling and rubbish collections guide from Kingston Council website, some relevant articles and watched a documentary produced by Netflix called Broken. Through research, I learn a word called “Wishcycling/ Aspirational recycling”. It means I wish it was recycled, but it is not. Nowadays even though we divide plastic waste into 7 types according to the plastic resin codes for recycling. Only the ones. twos, and fives that get widely recycled, and there’s barely a market for the others. Therefore, I learned that we can’t recycle our way out of plastic pollution. Recycling can be part of the solution. But we have to start with reducing overall.


MOOD BOARD 2 - I found a notion called “Zero Waste Living”. It is an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle that encourage people to reduce their plastic footprint in their daily life. I watched many vlogs from Zero waste YouTubers and draw sketches about things they mentioned that can help us reduce our plastic waste in their videos. For example, only one hand-made all-purpose cleaner can take place our cleaning detergent; Castile soap can take place our plastic bottled shampoo, hair conditioner, body wash, facial cleanser. Besides, I was also inspired by what Anne Marie Bonneau said:” We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” Thus, I think it is feasible to raise people’s awareness of reducing buying plastic packaged products and avoid using single-use items.
