Each student draws a self portrait (or a word cloud if they are resistant to art). They spend 5-10 minutes on this. They then use the self portrait to introduce themselves- usually 2-3 things. I sometimes ask them to include why they chose the course if it is at the beginning of a programme.

The only instructions are for them to 'be creative' and 'have fun'. This activity has been conducted in conjunction with the NLN and Peer Mentoring Resources Ltd as part of induction and students really liked it.

It can be hard to find a good ice breaker. One that worked well for us in the online environment was sending groups to breakout rooms and asking them to finish a fun Limerick. They were given the first 2 lines and must complete the final 3. Then back in the main room a rep from each group read out the one from their group. It generated a lot of laughs and the feedback from the students was good.

In teams of 6-8 students are given a roll of cello tape and a packet of latex-free balloons. The aim of the game is to assemble the most creative balloon structure they can. The team with the most creative idea wins. This activity was used as an ice-breaker during the first week of the Peer Mentoring Programme in TUD, which is an initiative run jointly by the National Learning Network and Peer Mentoring Resources Ltd. The feedback we received from students after this game was very positive.

Examples include

1) Arrange from tallest to shortest
2) Arrange alphabetically by first name
3) Arrange alphabetically by surname
4) Arrange from oldest to youngest (date, month and year)

These criteria as listed promote greater interaction and dialogue between students (Height can be very superficial) while name and age require conversation. Also gives good inside into leadership skills among students
