Representation

There are a lot of stereotypes which are represented in the different movie posters. One of the representations which is heavily shown is the use of gender. On the front covers of many of these movie posters, it has become recently quite popular to have a female on the front of the movie posters, and when a female is positioned on the front, they tend to look quite vulnerable. For example, in the early example of psycho, the woman on the front of the movie poster looks quite scared and frightened. Although in more early examples of psychological thriller movie posters, such film posters as Black Swan, Natalie Portman looks quite dangerous, however the crack through her face could connote to the idea of her perfect personality breaking down and her dark side being shown through the cracks. The males are representing very stereotypical ideas of dominance and masculinity, for instance the tough facial expression of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton on the front of the movie poster for Fight Club, also the many characters shown on the front of the movie poster for Inception, look quite vicious and deadly with the weapons of guns in their hands. The film poster Before I Go To Sleep, uses Nicole Kidman's face in the centre of the movie poster, whilst the two male faces are beside her, this makes her look more vulnerable by being surrounded by male characters, and the fact that an audience can only see a close up of the heads of the characters make an audience very drawn in to the film poster.

Imagery

The use of imagery in posters references to the look of the poster and the different images and photos that have been used in the poster. The use of imagery in these several posters, and psychological thriller posters over all, use the main actor or actors as the main showcasing image on the front of the poster. The images usually have some element of distortion about them to represent the genre of psychological thriller. For example, the crack in the face of the main actress in the Black Swan poster, and the canted angle of the actor walking through a door in the movie poster for the film Stigmata. Gone Girl has done the same type of imagery with a distorted image of the main actor, which resembles a buffering video. Imagery is important with psychological thriller posters as they help to express the strange issues that may occur in the film. For example the use of the soap as part of the image in the film Fight Club, as an important part of the film is to do with the creation and distribution of soap. The location may also be apart of the image, such films as Inception and Shutter Island display what the films location looks like, this can help an audience to understand and know what to expect from where the film is set. For example, by using the location of a city in the film poster of Inception, it shows that it is set in an urban modern area. Other mise-en-scene which is communicated through the film posters is lighting, this is very important as there is a big use of dark lighting and low-key lighting which can give an audience the sense that this film might be quite scary or have a dark element to it which could be scary. In Shutter Island, the use of a match giving the poster a bit of light could connote to the film being very dark and hidden in the shadows, as the main actors face appears through the background.

Narrative

The narrative of the films is always displayed through the movie posters, which means that whatever is on the movie poster helps to reference what happens in the film. For example, in the movie poster for Stigmata, the movie poster shows a wall with a door frame through it, and on that wall is inscribed strange writing in different shapes. This tells us that there may be something to do with another language and in this case the film does showcase the fact that a woman is writing in a different language. The film poster also shows a woman eyes which are bloody red and tells us that the narrative may hold parts about blood, which is true as there is scenes where a woman is being tortured and blood is a part of the torture. In the movie poster for the Black Swan, Natalie Portman is dressed as a ballerina on the movie poster and the crack through her face proves that she cracks at some point during the film, as her personality changes and she shows her dark side which has been waiting to come out.

Communication of the genre psychological thriller

The genre psychological thriller is conveyed very precisely through the artwork of the movie posters. Dark colours are used to communicate the mood of the film. The type of theme which the psychological thrillers run through can contain parts about the mind, reality, purpose and existence; therefore these are reflected through the imagery and use of text on the movie posters. For example, the film poster for Inception uses the plot of the film which is lucid dreaming, the film poster shows that a group of people are overlooking a city, however the way that the houses have been positioned and situated plays with the mind, as it seems as though the characters are above the houses but also next to other houses; therefore playing with the mind of an audience and representing the genre of psychological thriller through the images. There is a use of simplicity in the way that the movie posters are created but there is the use of something very specific to be different and stand out in the poster; for example the glitch in the body of the male character in the movie poster for Gone Girl.

Media Language

The titles of the movie posters are a significant part of the media language which is used to communicate to an audience, they ensure that they use connotations to portray certain aspects of the film. For example, the title of Before I Go To Sleep, is very simplistic and spaced out which could connote to elegance but as it is in capital letters, it can show an audience the importance of the words. The fact that the letters are in white can connote to positivity and safety, but this could be a contrast to the scared look of the faces which are plastered on the front of the movie posters. Another title which has used media language to communicate to an audience is the Silence of the Lambs, the title is in a very thin yet bold shade of red which connotes to warning and links to what the film is about. By using a bold red warning colour, it will attract an audience who is interested in watching a film that might scare them as the colour red can also connote to blood, gore and the chance of being scared. The colour of the title is also linked to the colour of the eyes of the person on the front of the movie poster. This then shows a waning in their eyes which will make an audience look at the detail of this, and helps reflect the genre again.

An audience will be influenced by a poster as it will essentially tell them that they need to go watch this film or buy it on DVD. This is done through bold lettering, attracting famous actors shown on the front, a colour scheme which reflects the genre of the film. For example, an audience will be interested in watching Inception because they can see that Leonardo Di Caprio is showcased on the front of the film, meaning that he is one of the main stars, they will also be impacted through the spaced out red letters of the name of the film, showing an audience that this film contains an element of violence.

There are different theorists and theories which are expressed in the layout of these movie posters. Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposites is coordinated in to the films of psychological thrillers quite a lot, especially in the movie posters for the films that are shown below. For example, Black Swan conforms to the theory of Levi-Strauss, as it uses the good versus evil binary opposite, this is shown through the elegant and pristine look of Natalie Portman as a gorgeous ballerina, however in the narrative of the film it shows how she is trying to find her dark side in order to convey her ability to be a black swan, by having the crack through her face this then shows that she is conforming to evil; this then shows overall the binary opposite of good versus evil on the movie poster for this film. Barthes theory is also expressed through movie posters, in the idea that his codes are used in the posters, for example the enigma code is expressed in the movie poster of Stigmata, as we do not know who the figure is in the door frame, which leaves an audience wondering, therefore making them want to go watch the film to find out who it is. Another code is action code which is used in the movie poster of Shutter Island, as he has lit a match stick we wonder what he will do with this light that he now has, which again leads on to the enigma code, as an audience wonders what happens next.
