In chapter one, we meet Violet, Mother, Father, Chloe, and Steven the story was set in 1920 and women can't vote yet. Violet finds letters from her older sister Chloe that where in Mothers desk. she now lives in new York and Is a nurse and drives and is a new woman. Violet is upset her Mother hid the letters. Her best friend flossy died of the influenza flue. In the end Violet is on the banks of the Susquehanna river mad at her parents for keeping the letters from her.

Chapter #2 : The Dying Mrs. Rewick

Violet runs away from home and goes to the train station. She tries to trick the ticket clerk to get the half price ticket but does not. She gets the normal ticket and boards the train. On the train she meets lady named Mrs. Renwick who is dying of sickness. They talk for a long time and discuss their similarity's and difference's

Chapter #3 : Meeting Myrtle

Violet got to New York and found that the train station was big, loud, and confusing. She didn't know where to go, and didn't know how to ask someone for help. A policeman asked her why she was alone, and she ended up tricking him and pretending she had found her sister. She entered the busy New York streets and became scared because it was even louder and busier than the train station. She didn't know how she would ever find Chloe. Finally she fell down into the gutter, and a young girl named Myrtle helped her up. She was in New York to go to a training institute for girls who would become maids, and was 10 years old. Violet thought how they were similar, because Myrtle was being forced to be a maid, and Violet would eventually be forced to marry some day. They found a hot dog stand and ate in a quiet alley at the very end of the chapter.

Chapter #4 : Henry Street

Violet makes it to Henry street and walks into what she thinks is her sister's house. It turns out her sister moved away like a year ago to Washington DC. They ask for the address from the man that is in the house. He doesn't tell them but they run to the train station because the man would have sent them back to home.

Hobie and the Brakeman

Violet and Myrtle make it to the train station. They meet a hobo named Hobie. He then helps them sneek on to the train. They ride a couple of miles and then when they are eating a meal a robber jumps on and grabs Myrtle they had to pay him to release her she felt like she was going to puke.

Violet and Myrtle are in Louse Home Alley eating breakfast but they run in to Mr Martin. they convince him to come to to Tennessee but he makes Violet write to her parents. they go to a train station but on the train the ticket clerk gets mad because Myrtle is not on the colord train car.

chapter #8 : In the Jim Crow Car

Myrtle gets to the colored train car but they call it the Jim Crow car. Myrtle meets an old lady named Mrs. Merganser. They talked about getting to vote. Mrs Merganser said, " we will never get to vote.

chapter #9: Mr. Martains Escape

In Chapter 9, Violet and Myrtle realize that Mr. Martin is running away from the police. They don't know what he did wrong. Two men called Palmer agents tried to find Mr. Martin, and they question the suffragists about him and accuse the women of not being very intelligent because they are female. The two men treated the women like they were dumb. We see examples of inequality with the Jim Crow car and Myrtle being separated from the rest of the group. Another example of inequality is between men and women, we can tell the agents don't think women should get the right to vote.

Chapter #10 : Red and Yellow Roses

Violet helps a woman who had fallen and was upset about losing her son in the war, and Violet gets angry about the way women have to sit in silence while men make decisions that affect them. It is unequal and unfair that women are not allowed to be a part of the decision-making process. We meet Miss Charlotte Rowe and she accompanies Violet from the train station to the hotel where she is staying. When Violet walks toward the entrance of the hotel, she is told by Miss Rowe that women use a different entrance at the side of the building. It is unequal that women and men cannot enter by the same entrance, and it is unfair that women have to enter at the side of the building, as if they aren’t important enough to enter at the front.

chapter #11 : Finding Chloe

In Chapter 11 we see the theme “inequality is injustice.” Violet is hungry and wants to find somewhere to eat, but is told she can’t eat in one of the hotel restaurants because it is for men only. It is unequal and unfair that men and women cannot eat in the same restaurant, especially given that there isn’t a restaurant just for women. She also realizes that the woman who pinned a red rose on her at the train station was an Anti, and she was staying in an Anti room at the hotel. She finds out she can eat sandwiches if she goes to the Anti's meeting. As she listens to them speak, she learns how they are getting men to change their minds about voting on the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Violet overheard some people talking and they said, "Mayhew" and she got really excited to finally see Chloe! Chloe and Violet finally see each other and Violet tells Chloe she had ran away from home to find her. Chloe is really tired and doesn't seem to be much help to find Myrtle or Mr. Martin.

chapter #12 : Violet Spies

Violet remembers the anti meeting and thinks I could be a spy. she goes to the rain station but runs in to Mr. Martain and Myrtel. the front desk clerk of the hotel kicks them out because Myrtel is colored.

chapter #13 : Dead Horse Alley

Violet, Myrtle, Mr. Martain, and Chloe find somewhere to get food but they have to eat in a alley. Then Chloe aggrees to let violet be a spy. they aggree to meet at a food place at noon. Violet goes back to the hermitage and goes to her room. the lady is there they talk and Violet accidentally makes the lady cry. Violet learned there is a meeting though.

chapter #14 : max Bloomstien's Pharmacy

Mr. Martain and Myrtle have been staying in dead Horse Alley for 2 days and they don't know when to leave. Meanwhile Violet and Chloe meet back up at the drug store. Violet tells Chloe every thing. Mr. Martain and Myrtle show up then Mr. Martain and Chloe get into a fight and Mr. Martain storms away with Myrtle folowing.

in chapter 15 Violet starts spying she figures out that the anti suffs are planing on kidnapping a suff. Mr. Martan goes to the hotel that the anti are in to dance with Chloe Myrtle follows and makes Shure no one sees her she gets seen but then she starts dusting the railing and escapes the lady then she sees Chloe on the other balcony. she makes her way over to Chloe but Violet makes every one notice her. then a old lady who is also on the balcony gets in to a discusin vith close about Myrtle
