The so-called modern day beauty standard is mostly built up through advertisements and celebrities on social media. Whenever you see models that are called beautiful, they almost always have a set of common features. Like fair skin, smooth hair, small waist or muscle, jawline and so on. When people are repeatedly exposed to media that only portray specific features as beautiful, it creates the idea of an "ideally desired body type" which is what we refer to as the beauty standard. Because this image is standardized via widespread images, social media plays an important role.

Media defines the beauty standards, which we then accept as the ideal version of a person. Media pushes us to see achieving these ideals as the primary goal of being attractive and wanted, which then affects our self-esteem by lowering our own body image in our minds and by imposing the unrealistic and mostly unachievable ideal body as the ultimate goal.

Diversity of physical features is of utmost importance when we ask ourselves how social media can improve self-esteem about body image. Escaping the "same face syndrome", which refers to the repeated usage of similar faces or bodies with limited diversity, may be the key. Portraying different colors of skin, unique features of various races, varied body fat to muscle mass ratio, etc. is important, considering teenagers grow up seeing these images everywhere throughout their lives. If, instead of always seeing the same unrealistic body type and trying to change themselves to fit this beauty standard, teenagers could actually see their own body types on media, they would have significantly less reason to doubt themselves or feel low on self-esteem.
