In the text “The Battle Over GMOs”, Alessandra Potenza teaches that people feel different ways about GMOs. The author begins by explaining what GMOs are and why they are gaining popularity. For example, she states that GMOs are organisms whose DNA is combined with a gene from an unrelated species to produce a desired trait which can be helpful in feeding people and fighting diseases. Potenza then explains that many researchers and scientists believe that we just don’t know enough to know their long-term effects or safeness. For example, up to 80% of what we eat has GMOs even though we might not know it. The author explains that many people and companies think GMOs are harmful to people and the environment. In the text it said that companies like McDonalds, Chipotle, and General Mills have taken steps to ban the use of GMOs in their foods. The author goes on to say that other people, such as farmers, believe GMOs are beneficial and can end world hunger. For example, bug killing crops and crops that could thrive in a dry climate could be a resource for areas struggling with crop development.
