People view Katy Perry's song "Dark Horse" as a way of confirming racial stereotypes. So, the video opens as Perry runs amok with appropriation of a different kind, dressing in anything that looks or feels like it could be inspired by Ancient Egypt. People believe she turned an entire cultural and ethnic identity into a costume. "The problem here lies in the fact that Perry thinks it's acceptable to use another country or ethnic group's culture as a costume or as a prop, let alone for one of her countless bubblegum pop songs. This mocks and stereotypes a country and its people for the sake of pop music."

How does the media shape our views of race and how does American society define racial roles?

In recent studies it has exposed deep racial divides and reignited a national conversation about race. A new Pew Research Center survey finds profound differences between black and white adults in their views on racial discrimination, barriers to black progress and the prospects for change. Blacks, far more than whites, say black people are treated unfairly across different realms of life, from dealing with the police to applying for a loan or mortgage. And, for many blacks, racial equality remains an elusive goal.
