Brown had ideas on how to end slavery he believed that political action and moral persuasion could win the fight against slavery. Fredrick Douglass was trying to get Brown to abandon his plans on trying to end slavery. Brown began his campaign in 1859 by leading an attack on Harpers Ferry. Brown chose this place because he was going to try to make a stronghold. Browns plans were very big for such a small army he had sixteen white males and five African Americans that made up his army. He wanted to seize the arsenal and distribute the weapons to slaves to make an insurrection. He knew that the slave uprising would take time to happen but the movement never happened. The authorities were aware of the raid that happened and local militia met up with the federal troops and they exchanged gunfire with Browns troops. Eight of browns troops died and they retreated to the armory and they got overpowered and two of Browns sons died and eight other men. Brown was captured and hung for his crimes.
