The poem uses a lot of questions, where someone is questioning everything on what they can do in a time where everyone needs to stay indoors due to a virus spreading around, as all of this correlates to how poor they are and the questions given are very essential questions for humans to survive.

The Persona of the Poem

The persona is either the parent/guardian of Gina, the person they are talking to right now, and I came to this conclusion since it seems like the persona is trying to take care of themselves and Gina, as Gina would probably be the child in this situation and also mentioned the children in the line "Will there still be some left for the children tomorrow?"

What are some of the figures of speech present in the poem? What image or meaning is conjured by important lines in the poem and how do they contribute to the entire meaning of the poem?

They talk about the "dizzying tide of hunger" as a metaphor that they have no to little food left to survive, and this probably sets the tone for the entire poem all because food is part of survival and what the persona is talking about in the poem is how could they survive if they are lacking the most essential things to live?

What the poem is trying to say

The poem is basically trying to say "How can we survive when we're this poor?" since at the end, the persona said "What's so right in being this poor" meaning they already had a rough time before hand most likely but now due to the pandemic, they cannot go out, there is a virus surrounding the outside and what they meant by suffering silence to me is probably saying that the poor don't get enough help because they're poor so they have to fend for themselves since they are never seen, just complete silence on their behalf.

How this chosen text is relevant to the world today

This text is very relevant to the world today because there are so much people out there who are poor, who don't have the help to survive especially nowadays where the COVID-19 surge is happening. Some people probably don't have vaccines because they can't afford it, and it's something that some of our government officials don't see.

What the poem tells us about the world and how our world reflected in and by this poem

This poem tells us that there is still a huge gap between the upper and lower class, and that there is still that sense of favoritism or power within these classes. The world always had these types of stereotypes of these people and it is something that is reflected on how much people are currently in poverty, and worst, some probably lost their jobs due to COVID-19 with no help, and it seems that it might keep happening unless we or the government do something to help them, but when?

My personal thoughts, comments, and reactions to the poem I read.

I felt bad honestly, and I recently remember my foster family during my Grade 10 CSIP and I would think that they are struggling right now due to the surge of COVID, and this is a testament to how so much people can't be heard just because of their class. I have to admit that I as well have always never thought of the lower class because I'm one of the few who can just stay inside and not worry about COVID that much but then now I remember that there are so much people suffering everyday just to fight against the virus like the doctors, nurses, and of course, the less fortunate people. This poem resonated with me because it feels like all we have been hearing for the past 2 years is COVID, and it's getting more and more repetitive and I want it to end, and I would believe that the people who are fighting also want it to end. All we can do is hope for the best.
