An inference is a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. It comes from the verb infer, which means coming up with an idea about something using the evidence available. You use observation and background to reach a logical explanation. You are making an educated guess.

We make inferences everyday. For example, don't you make guesses of what mom and dad might give you for your birthday or on Christmas Day? Or you might ask them where they might take you for your birthday and they might say, you need to guess or it is a surprise!

If you see someone eating a new food and he or she makes a nasty expression, what does that mean? Take a few minutes and write down what you infer. Take an educated guess.

If you see somone crying and screaming, what does that mean? Take a few minutes and write down your educated guess.

If you see someone smiling and laughing, what can you say about that person?

Now take a few minutes and think about an inference you have made today or yesterday.
