The evergreen adapts to its environment by having leaves that survive the cold. Its leaves are like needles, and drop from one to twenty years. If the trees have their leaves all year round, they may take advantage of periods of thaw to make food during the winter. It also doesn't have to waste energy on growing a whole new batch of leaves, when they keep their leaves all year round. They have a dark green color, indicating that the sun-absorbing chlorophyll is bountiful (bountiful means large amount of). The text stated that the plant gathers as much energy as it can from the sparse sunlight, and that the dark colo9r of the plant helps it be more warm. If there is a large amount of precipitation, many of it, and is often, frozen and unavailable to the plant. The thick coating of wax on the needle-like leaves help and allow the plant to get more water, "as there is less surface area available for evaporation." The leaves have holes that are called stomata that is used for gas exchange. These holes can be shut extremely tight to make sure no water comes out. "The small pointy leaves and cone-like shape of the tree itself shed snow more easily than other trees so the evergreens are not as likely to break under the weight of snow and ice."
