The main way songbirds identify other members of their species they can mate with is by singing their songs or identifying other birds' songs. Because multiple different bird populations may live in the same environment, each species has a unique sound that they can identify. Birds without songs would not be able to mate and reproduce, so they would not pass their traits on to their offspring. With the example of flocking, birds that fly outside of the flock are less likely to find a mate, and won't pass their traits off to their offspring.
