The whole of Great Zimbabwe was created in 1100 CE by many indigenous African people. The city was split into 3 different places, The Hill Complex, The Valley Complex was where the common people lived, usually in mud houses and not like the stone buildings built in the Great Enclosure where royalty lived. Ancient Greek leaders such as Alexander the Great stayed in stone building like the ones in the Great Enclosure.

The first buildings built in the Great Zimbabwe region were in the Hill Complex, the Complex was used as both a place where people could defend themselves as well as a place where religion was practiced. The Shona Peoples religion was surrounded around the creator god, Mwari, making a mostly monotheistic religion. Most of the faith held in the Shona People was passed through stories of ancient leaders such as Mwari. Stories of ancient leaders were similar to the way that Ancient Greece passed down stories such as the Iliad.
