         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>civil war doctors only had about 2 years of medical school<br>most civil war surgeons had never performed surgery before<br>there was 10000 surgeons in the union army and 4000 served in the confedarate <br>they did not have as much knowledge of diseases and bacteria as we did today,  and as a result, thousands died from diseases such as typhoid or dysentery<br>the deadliest thing was disease<br>"for every soilder that died in battle, two died of disease"<br>the diet of the soilders as well as hygene and camp conditions contributed to the disease<br>for curing stomachaches, they either used opium or a mixture of mercury and chalk<br>bleeding was a common "cure"<br>doctors sometimes took over barns for hospitals - an unsanitary place to use<br>tools were not cleaned,  and people did not use gloves<br>75% of amputees survived<br>surgeries were allowed to be made more complicated with Anesthesia<br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>~ Hospitals were filled with disgusting smells, people, and bugs <br>~ Nursing involved a lot of different things that you have to do, including running your fingers down someones throat to see if they are choking<br>~ The hospitals weren't sanitary at all<br>~ Very low hygiene<br>~ Bugs (flies, mosquitoes, lice, and gnats), no personal hygiene, smell, wounds, no protection<br>~ People were covered in bugs and smelled horrible<br>~ Many people ended up dying from diseases such as typhoid and pneumonia<br>~ Chloroform was so scarce (Only used for amputations and opium)<br>~ Nursing was no treat - had to smell the stench, try and help dying people, bugs, ect. <br><br>`</div>]]></description>
